Breckenridge flower garden

For some reason, flowers in the Colorado mountains are always extraordinary.  I think the combination of the short growing season, which makes everything bloom at once, the cool temperatures and the proximity to the sun with the extra UV rays, gives us spectacular shows.  I was in Breckenridge last week with my camera, and found some homes and businesses with some beautiful displays.

We have flowers like this all over Summit County, but the Victorian homes in Breckenridge just add to the charm.

What does it take to make flowers grow in Summit County?  Not much...just plant them in the ground or pot, get them water on a regular basis, a little Miracle Gro every so often, and watch them bloom like crazy.  I usually plant my pots right around Memorial Day.  Sometimes I get eager and plant earlier in May as I see the flowers in all the garden centers in Denver, but I have learned to stick to pansies early as we will always get snow in May, and I still need to keep sheets handy to cover them at night even into June.  We often have frost right after Labor Day, so the season is short, but what it lacks in length it makes up for in brilliance. Home in Breckenridge with a garden

To have this kind of garden, a mixture of perennials and annuals works really well.  A mainstay in our gardens, and what you see in these photos are delphiniums.  They are the tall ones with the purple spikes.  Lupine does well if you can keep the aphids away from them, and penstemon are native, so they also do well.  The garden above appears to have hollyhocks, but I have never been able to get much in the way of blooms from them before we get frost again.  The Summit County Garden Club tour was last weekend, so you may have missed it,  but if you want to see some fabulous gardens, all you need to do is drive around the county.

Many people prefer to buy their flowers baskets and window boxes ready made and not have to weed gardens.  We see front porches festooned with baskets and pots and they really make a statement.  Breckenridge log cabin with flower basket

Even the towns have flower baskets hanging on light poles and the stop sign holders in the middle of the street in Frisco have flowers in them.

Businesses have found that the flower displays really attract attention and many have spent a lot of money on them.  When you add up the number of baskets and multiply that by the cost of $40 to $100 each, you can see that the expense for the relatively short time is huge.  Steak and Rib and Fattys, two restaurants in Breckenridge probably have the best displays.

WoW, gorgeous photos, Joanne. The buildings all look so quaint, just like pictures from gold rush days and the flowers are so bright and lush. I wish Summit County wasn't so far away, I would drive over for the day !

I have beautiful memories of Breckenridge.  I used to ski Breckenridge every year for about seven years, but I haven't been in twenty years - but oh how I loved the place!

Wow!  Summit County is full of beauty- from the flowers and the other scenery as well.  We have a shorter growing season too, so I know exactly what you mean.  Hollyhocks only bloom the second year after planting.  A lot of people don't know that- so keep trying!  Eventually, you will have a plant that sticks around and comes back.  They are worth the wait.

This is the very REASON TO VISIT BRECKENRIDGE!  But you missed one of my favorites - there is a house / shop on the corner of the highway in the center of town that I love. I'll be up in a couple of weeks taking my own pictures.

Joanne, these are gorgeous photos!  Breckenridge CO looks like a beautiful place.  My flowers die with the heat down here.  :)  It would be great to be able to see the mountains everyday.

Ashley, Breckenridge seems to be the place to go in the summer.

Sybil, why don't you come an pay us a visit?  A hot day for us is 80'.  It is a good way to get out of the heat.

Jo, those homes, except for the log one, are actually newer.  Breckenridge has some very strict regulations about what you can build in the central core of the town.  Even the commercial buildings have to look like they have been there for year.  It is part of what makes it so charming.

Missy, after 8 months of winter, the flowers truly are welcome, even though we love our winters too.  We have a saying here; "People come for the winters and stay for the summers" and it is true.

Linda, our wildflowers are just as pretty, and you can see them anywhere  you hike.

Todd, come back and ski some more!  The mountain has changed and Breck has opened some new terrain that is good skiing.

Christina, I get blooms on my hollyhocks, but only a couple and then we get frost.  We need another couple of weeks frost free for them to do well.  Our season is Memorial Day to Labor day.

Dena, that would be the Bay Street Trading company.  Their gardens are awesome!  I didn't have time to park and take a photo that day.  I was just doing drive bys.  I should go and do a post just on their garden alone.  Call me when you come up and we will go and have lunch.

Chris, I have found that writing about lifestyle, not just real estate, brings in more readers and gets you showing up on searches so that people come across the site accidentally.  Then my hope is that once they know it, they will come back.

I don't know why I always forget the name of Bay Street Trading, I've written them enough checks. I'll will call you and we can do lunch. With any luck my broker is following me up. You can help convince her that blogging isn't eating up my time.

Some nice pictures Joanne.  Thanks for visiting my blog.  I will also add you as an associate.  The summer sure is a great time in the Rockies.  I have to say I enjoy it more than winter.

Dena, blogging isn't eating up your time?  It sure eats up mine.  The question is, is it productive time?  I think so!

Julie, I think we enjoy it more because we have less of it.  I do like winter though, except when I have to scrape my car off at work....

Joanne,

The photos are beautiful - I can hardly believe all the hanging baskets on the building with the teal trim.  The Colorado Mountains in the background are impressive - are the clearings on the hills ski trails?

Paul, I was just in Scottsdale, so I think it is your turn now.  June would probably be a good time next year when Scottsdale is hot!

Lynda, I wish I could take credit but the person planting the flowers should get it!

Cyndee, this is a glorious place and I am tickled to be able to share it.  Thanks for your visit.
