Communication Skills

Have you ever had someone ask you a question and as you are in the middle of your answer suddenly you realize their eyes have glazed over?  Is it that you have confused them?  Are they thinking about something other than the answer to Their question? or...they really don't care!

Strange that we spend most of our day talking, but do we really every SAYanything?  At one time it seemed rude when someone would ask "Do you understand?". However, the older I get that seems a very reasonable question.  After all the generations listen, think, talk and process totally different.

Recently we took a class on Communication and it really popped my eyes open! It is important that we speak to each generation in the way they think and listen, with the devices used by generations.  Be it telephone, handwritten letter, email, twitter, texting etc., we cannot expect a 75 year old to text..they want a phone call on a telephone since they may not have a cell phone!  Then a 23 year old does not want a handwritten letter either.  We can treat everyone the same giving the same information, time and consideration and play on the field they feel comfortable with.

Whatever our profession it is essential to listen to a client, find their comfort zone for communication and use that in your dealings with them.  To expect the client to communicate within your comfort zone is not working in your clients best interest and in the long run it is likely that the client may leave and go with someone who will.
