Buyers...Sellers....We're Not Promised Tomorrow....

This is going to get personal, but I just took a phone call from a buyer client who has had his wake up call and he is wisely moving up his retirement date to sooner rather than later and he wanted to let me know that we need to get shaking in finding he and his wife a home.

I reported earlier this week that Asset Managers are contacting me about increasing inventory levels of Bank Owned properties. The market is going to see a flood of inventory and it is coming. What this means is many buyers will have too many choices and they will delay making a decision because they will continue to look for that better deal. Who knows what "better deal" is out there. For these folks they can wait, and wait and wait and look and look and look until they look themselves back out of these incredible deals and a market that is  finally back on its way to recovery. Then they'll be saying...I coulda...woulda...shoulda....

Here's where it gets personal...my life partner and I found our dream home on a canal with access to the Intracoastal Waterway in Edgewater Florida. We moved in December 20, 2006 and we managed to get the house set up and decorated in time to have the kids visit and celebrate Christmas in the new home.

I remember lying in bed and we were both dog tired and sore from the lifting and hard work and the room was pitch dark because we hadn't unpacked any night lights. Richard's voice said to me through the darkness how happy that he was that he was in this home and how he felt that he had really accomplished so much more than he had ever dreamed...a farm boy from Maine living in this incredible home. We both felt that we were at some resort because of its beauty and how grateful we were that we were so blessed. This was the pillow talk...of two happy and contented souls.

A year went by and there was one more wonderful Christmas and the house was filled with friends, good aromas and family. In January, Richard was a bit off kilter and by February he decided to go see a doctor for some back pain. No diagnosis was made except that his energy was zapped and April 5 2008 five moles were discovered on his neck while shaving. Dr. Sherman biopsied them immediately and the moles were melanoma.

May 5, 2008 Richard departed this planet. The interim month was a whirlwind of Hospice, pain meds, family and friends. The home that he so loved was where he remained through it all. I was so grateful that he could be kept at home for his final days and remain in familiar surroundings with loved ones and his beloved dogs.

We are given gifts through all of our experiences, especially the most painful ones. This painful experience taught me that we need to appreciate each day and love fully. We need to stop holding out for something better when something wonderful is already here...and grab on with both hands and relish it and savor every moment fully.

If you are buying....or selling....pay attention to what is important and who is important in your life....while we all want to make wise fiscal decisions sometimes for a thousand dollars here or there I have seen such angst that I am amazed at what people are doing to themselves and their loved ones....please remember...we aren't promised tomorrow, live fully and love today.

P.S.  I've decided to sell this gorgeous home...it is too large for one and I'll be listing it soon. I'll be working up comps shortly...mean while...here's the tour.

Sorry to hear about your loss of Richard.  You do have a lovely home and I'm sure it made Richard's final days a little bit more better.  As you transition to a new physical space, you'll still have the good memories of the days with Richard but also the gentle reminders that you are on a new path that will have new memories to be created.

Thank you all for your kind words and wishes, I am moving on, but my purpose in writing this was to remind everyone that they need to get on with living today and not keep on holding out for something better for tomorrow. People can waste their whole life doing this.

I see it over and over again with buyers holding out and losing house after house and sometimes it is so senseless and meanwhile their family and marriages are suffering because of money and if they would just not try to squeeze every last nickel out of the deal, they could be living in their dream homes and enjoying life together.

Again, thank you.
