Staying indoors today on this wet, rainy Sunday in Essex County, New Jersey. Just a week ago today, the sun was shining on such a beautiful day, my family and I spent Sunday afternoon at Essex County's Turtle Back Zoo located in West Orange, New Jersey.
Turtle Back Zoo located in West Orange, New Jersey sits on 20 acres in the beautiful South Mountain Reservation, conveniently located on Northfield Road. Turtle Back Zoo exhibits species from all 5 continents. In addition to the naturalistic exhibits located throughout Turtle Back Zoo's green grounds, you can ride the zoo's miniature train, feed the animals, play on the animal themed playground, take a spin on the carousel, enjoy a pony ride or catch an animal program. About six years ago, when my oldest was still in pre-school, I had his birthday party at Turtle Back Zoo. It was a big hit and the kids had a blast nicely walkingrunning from animal exhibit to animal exhibit. It was nice change of pace to have the kids enjoying an "outside" birthday party and they were just as excited once we entered the indoor climate controlled party room. There is also an outside area to enjoy parties and/or zoo family get together.
Many changes have taken place over the years to Turtle Back Zoo. It's always an adventure at Turtle Back Zoo. You never know which animals will be hiding out or which will be perched up on display or laying on a rock enjoying the sun's rays. Although we did visit the bear's house, we never actually did see the black bears this Sunday. Some areas were still under construction. Among the Turtle Back Zoo Exhibits include:
- American Alligator
- Australian Exhibit
- Black Bear
- Essex Farm
- Great Plains
- Prairie Dogs
- Reptile Center
- River Otter
- South America
- Squirrel Monkeys
- Wild New Jersey
- Wolf Woods
- Penguin Coast
- Southeast Asia
Whether you live in West Orange, New Jersey or surrounding Essex County areas or just visiting West Orange for a day, Turtle Back Zoois great place to visit and unwind. We opted to skip the gift shop this time and had lunch before we went and for just $36 for a family of five, we enjoyed a beautiful April Sunday afternoon at Turtle Back Zoo. I am now trying to get a group together for May 15, 2010 for Night Moves at Turtle Back Zoo. We've never been there in the dark so it should be fun!
