Life With No Reverse

Back in January of this year my Ranger's transmission started acting up. I completely lost reverse. I love my truck and getting rid of it is not an option so repairing it makes sense. Trying to save a few dollars I decided I would repair it myself. I looked online and found this particular year had trouble with some solenoids and a valve body inside the transmission so I called our local Ford garage and ordered them. Figuring it would only take a few days I didn't think it would be to tough maneuvering without reverse for a couple days. As it turns out we use reverse a lot more than I thought and when the few days turned into a few months I started to worry. Well two dealerships and four months later the parts came in and I installed them on a weekend and....alright, still no reverse. It does go forward better than ever but backing up is still not an option. By now though I have became quite accustomed to finding parking spaces that I am able to pull through and don't pull into areas I can roll back out of. Today I was thinking about life in general and how my Ranger transmission was like life.

We are too used to running forward and backing up at the least sign of trouble. What if there were no backing up in life? It would take a little getting used to but it might be the best thing ever. Always finding a forward path means no back tracking and restarting. We would have to slow down a little and plan our moves better but always moving closer to our goals and not away from them would have it's advantages. Imagine a Government that slows down and moves only forward towards goals instead of pushing bills through and then spending enormous amounts of time and money backing up to try again. Imagine how much thought we would have to put into every move and how much better the results are from thinking before acting. I still have to repair my Ranger but if one good thing came out of having no reverse it was thinking about what it would be like...Life Without Reverse.

Randy, as in life, looking forward is great but sometimes we need to look behind us which will guide us on what direction to move forward. As the Toyota slogan states, 'move in any direction as long as you're moving forward'. However, looking back can provide us with the window of opportunities that lie ahead. :)
