Front Yard Vegetable Gardens - When What Was Old Is New Again

While having breakfast this morning and reading the "newspaper" (online news forums), I ran across an interesting article on CNN about people tearing up their front yards and putting in vegetable and herb gardens. Now, before moving to the country, we grew the occasional vegetable or herb in our front yard (okra does a beautiful hibiscus imitation and rosemary provides a wonderful, scented welcome when planted beside the front door or the steps coming up to the house), but nothing like this. While some of the neighbors object to anything other than the same old/same old plain flat lawn, there appear to be a number of benefits to this approach, if done thoughtfully and well. Very interesting! I chuckled that Mrs. Baumann dressed her twins as a carrot and a tomato to attend the public hearing over whether she could grow vegies in her front lawn! Now that's funny! Thanks for the smile!~

Here in the northwest it has become very common for people to grow vegetables and perennials in their front lawns. It has even grown into the parking strips (that part of the front yard on the other side of the sidewalk, part of the street right of way). Many people are using that area for gardens, and the city doesn't seem to mind.

Mary, I thought that was cute and clever (and attention-getting!), as well.

David, I'd like to see this spread throughout the country. As I said, if done well (see the photo - that's a vegetable garden, folks), it can be an enhancement to a property. One could even have the traditional "flower beds" edging the lawn that have, instead of pansies, beautiful vegetable plants and herbs (as I said, okra does an admirable hibiscus imitation, and you can eat it!).

Well I'm glad to hear people (other than me) are putting gardens in the front yard. I have a huge flower bed in front, tired of planting stuff all the time and decided to plant some tomato and cucumber plants this year. We are really enjoying the vegetables and I may add a few more next year.

That is a very interesting idea, however in my location all my veggies would be enjoyed by everyone else but me due to they would help themselves to my garden!

Love this post! I have always mixed my vegetable plants with my ornamental flowers and really like this idea. I have long thought it would be great to have plants all over in the front & back yard as well instead of just grass to mow. Interesting...

The thing about a front yard garden is that your neighbors can easily slip on over to chat and...picnic...that sounds like fun to me.
