Bees on site: Bellingham Home Inspection (King of the House)

Sometimes, when working as an inspector, it is easy to forget that unexpected, and sometimes dangerous, surprises could await you. Not only do you have to make sure you do not do a high wire act from your ladder but, also, you can run into pests such as the nest below. I saw this yesterday at an inspection. Since there was so much activity, I thought it a pretty good photo. Had this been in the attic area, and sometimes they build there if they can get in, this would have been a potential problem for me. The main risk that I find with the assorted wasps and hornets is that they secretely nest up under roof vents, under vent hoods on roofs, they sneak inside vinyl siding if there are spaces. A couple times, when checking to make sure a bath fan was ducted outside, they have made me pay for invading their inner space. Obviously, if an inspector had a bee allergy, it could be a pretty dangerous job.

Thanks for buzzing through.

Gotta say, if I found that in one of my listings, it wouldn't be the highlight of my day!

Cheers,

Yeah Steve, These are a common ocurrance under eaves and often, in attics.  By the way, what was the condition of that asbestos-cement siding?

The asbestos cement siding was primarily broken and seriously damaged. There were gaps that would allow for water intrusion into the wall. However, the primary issue was severe anobiid beetle damage in the crawl space, largely the result of conducive conditions such as the vents all being blocked intentionally for years and years. The posts are gone, the beams are gone, the joists are gone, the sill plate is gone, the rim joist is gone and much of the subfloor is confetti.

Steven, when I was alot younger a friend tried his aim with his pellet gun on a nest about twice that size.  He lived, but I don't know how well he learned.

Kevin,

I used to remove these for friends and family. There is something pretty exciting about getting all bundled up, getting about 20 feet away and squirting them with one of those bombs made for distance. They, inevitably, come headed your way so their is a bit of an adrenaline rush. Never been stung that way, always when I least expected it.

They'll heat you up quick!  Hornets seem to be much smarter than wasps, they some how know who it was that was messing with them.
