How Many Hours Are in a Day?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Fran Rokicki Realty, LLC

We have all felt the loss of time during our work week.  By the time you realize it, the day is half over.  Relatives are calling and wondering where you are, what you've been up to and in general, they ask, why haven't we seen you lately.  My answer, I am working and maintaining my business.  Yes, there is time for family.  Immediate family.  I do try to block time, during the week, for every day needs.  Eating, sleeping, shopping and cleaning, still need to be done.

We don't work an eight to five day.  Some days it lasts until ten at night.  Other days, can be quiet.  It's when that quiet time arrives, that we must utilize those hours.  Taking a walk, visiting a friend or relative, or just taking time to relax, is a necessary element of our day.  If you don't take the time to just breathe and relax, you will burn out.

We may work seven days a week, but, if you plan your days well, this can be better than working five.  Allow yourself the time in between appointments and take those small moments to relax.  I haven't joined a yoga group, though I have heard that those who have, experience a good deal of relaxation.  I am starting a garden, soon.  Once the weather stays consistently warm, I love digging in the garden.  It offers me that little bit of relaxation.  The scent of the garden, vegetables and flowers, is a steady reminder to me, of that relaxing time.  It will last through fall season.  So, whatever will help you to relax, make sure that you do take the time to do so.

Keep selling, the market is very kind today.  Just remember, to breathe in between!

Frances, I think it is so importatant to have "me time" factored into your week.  we need that to stay sane!  I did a survey once, and Gardening was the #1 answer...

When we are busy, it is hard to explain to friends and family how consuming and time sensitive our jobs are.  The people who live in my house, get it...they see me & know what I am doing.  Those outside, who have never worked for themselves, have a little more difficulty comprehending how someone who works from home could have so little free time.

Take a few minutes with those people to explain yourself & your job.  Relieving some of the guilt you experience in saying "no, I can't this week" goes a long way in reducing your stress level.

Taking a scheduled breather has become so important. Gardening is instant and long term gratification and I try to get as much in before if gets too hot here. I try to take Wednesdays off too, for other creative and social pursuits, sometimes I actually do it. Keep on breathin'!

Hi Fran,

It's especially hard to turn it off when you work more from home than in an office. And then of course, while you're driving around you can't help but take note of how many signs are out, or not out, who's got the listing, and who's trying to sell privately.

But you are absolutely right. There has got to be outside interests besides our jobs or we will be all-consumed and then burn out.

Thanks for the post.

Hi Fran ~ "Not enough" was what popped into my head when I saw the title of your post.  I do grab my moments usually - if I start a good book for example I'm likely to keep reading until I'm done even if I end up going into work at noon - but right now there's no novel reading going on - would that business was spread more evenly over the days and months.  Making hay....

Hi Fran.  This is the biggest challenge that I face - making time for life outside of real estate.  I bought some plants last week and they are still in their nursery pots.

Thanks, Lou, Bill and Kathy.  We all need to remember to keep our life going, while we are working:)  I, have lost a few plants, too:)  Either with too much water, or not enough.  Luckily, plants don't talk!

I now turn my phone off at 7 PM MT and not back on again until 7AM MT. In another month, I will move it to 6 PM and 8 AM MT. Life is precious and each of ours is something to value. After all, we tend to adjust our schedules around our buyers and sellers and everyone in between who wants information. Make the rest of 2010 time for you. My plan this week is to get some tomato plants and watch them grown under Santa Fe sunshine.

Thanks to all who understand and agree, that our time is precious and we do need to set some boundaries to protect our life and daily habits.  Whether it be a garden, a favorite hobby (golf, tennis), we all do need an outlet to refresh and renew our minds.  Our problem solving skills can be very draining.

Emily, I have a black lab, too:)  What's your puppy's name?  My dog is named, Jack.  He is a delight to our family.  We share many walks and good laughs with him.

Fran, my pup's name is Effie. She loves to bark for service when she thinks I am on the phone too long or when computer is sitting on my lap instead of the her sisters or brothers - the way cool cats.

She really floored me on mother's day (see my last blog post here) and placed a "mommy" ad in our local Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper. I was so touched I took the day off!

Next time you blog about Jack, include a pix!
