If you're thinking about adding a pet to your family then I urge you to consider adopting.
Why? 1) You'll be saving a life. 3-4 million dog and cats are euthanized each year. This number could be reduced if more people adopted pets instead of buying. 2) You know your money will be going towards a good cause and not contributing to a puppy mill. Puppy mills are "factory style" breeding facilities that put profit well before the well being of the pets. Learn more here. 99% of dogs in pet stores are supplied by puppy mills. 3) You will feel absolutely wonderful knowing you have saved a life. How do I know? I am speaking from experience.
We have adopted 3 wonderful dogs from the Humane Society of West Louisiana. Here's the story of each and pictures from then & now:
Roscoe- Roscoe was our first adopted dog. He is a shepherd/terrier mix. Roscoe was abandoned by his family at 6 months old and found by the manager of our local PetsMart. My daughter brought him of to college with her as she was moving 2.5 hours away from home and wanted a companion with her. He is now 3 years old and continues to live with my daughter now in Nashville, TN.
Juno- Juno is a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix or as many people call them, a "Chiweenie". Juno was 8 weeks old when she was adopted. When her mother was taken in by the humane society she was pregnant and had heart worms. Since she was pregnant she was unable to take the medicine for her condition and died after her puppies were born. We picked Juno out of all her brothers and sisters. She is rambunctious but more lovable than any other dog you could find. At 2 years old now she is living with my daughter and Roscoe.
Maggie- Maggie was an impulse decision. The Humane Society was hosting adoption day at Petsmart and when I saw her I had an instant connection. She is a true shelter dog and the vet cannot even be certain of exactly what she is a mix of. This makes me love her even more. She just turned 1 in February and loves playing in our backyard and eating the pears that have fallen off the tree. Maggie is endlessly loyal and loving.
