It's so interesting what makes the news and what doesn't - isn't it?  Often it is the headlines that grab our attention - and give the impression that it is those headlines that are important, impactful and relevant.  Were it only so.  Should this have been on the front page maybe?

Courage.

You're a 19 year old  kid.

You're critically wounded and dying in the jungle somewhere in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam .

It's  November  11, 1967.

LZ (landing zone) X-ray.

Your unit is outnumbered 8-1 and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 yards away, that your commanding officer has   ordered the MedEvac helicopters to stop coming in.

You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns and you know you're not getting out.

Your family is half way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you'll never see them again.

As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.

Then - over the machine gun noise - you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter.

You look up to see a Huey coming in. But ... It doesn't seem real because no MedEvac  markings are on it.

Captain Ed Freeman is coming in for you.

He's not MedEvac so it's not his job, but he heard the radio call and decided he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire anyway.

Even after the MedEvacs were ordered not to come.  He's coming  anyway.

And he drops it in and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 3 of you at a time on board.

Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire to the doctors and nurses

and safety.

And, he kept coming back!! 13 more times!!  Until all   the wounded were out. No one knew until the mission was over that the Captain had been hit 4 times in the legs and left arm.

He took 29 of you and your buddies out that day. Some would not have made it without the Captain and his Huey

Medal of Honor Recipient,  Captain  Ed Freeman, United States Air Force,

Died last Wednesday at the age of 70, in Boise, Idaho.

May God Bless and Rest His Soul.

I bet you didn't hear about this

Hero's passing, but we've sure seen

a whole  bunch about Michael

Jackson and Tiger Woods.

Medal of  Honor

Winner  Captain Ed Freeman  ...

Liz - what a great man and a great story... Truth be told, i've not heard of it, thrugh no fault of TV broadcasters, just too busy to watch the news or read anything this last week.  Thank you for telling a tale worth listening to.  I'll take this over any five second sound bite.

So appropriate.  I just finished watching the last but one episode of The Pacific, about World War II.  It is unbelievable, the bravery of these people.  And you are right.  Hear plenty about Michael Jackson and never heard about Ed Freeman.  Thanks for posting this.

I had heard about this outstanding account of bravery before, but did not know that this hero had passed. This is a great account of courage and determination that is awe-inspiring.

Great story and I believe I have it word for word in an email in my mailbox... well actually there was part about

"Shame on the American media !!!

Now ... YOU pass this along on YOUR mailing list.

Please."

You did NOT include in yours.  And perhaps the  "It's so interesting what makes the news and what doesn't - isn't it?  Often it is the headlines that grab our attention - and give the impression that it is those headlines that are important, impactful and relevant.  Were it only so.  Should this have been on the front page maybe?"  is your original spin on it.

Liz, you've brought tears to my eyes with the story of this unsung hero. The media focuses on 'yellow journalism' to sell to the public - but this story is a great human interest piece and even the media should have picked up on this one. Good for you for writing about this brave man.

Thanks for sharing this, sometimes I am not sure how they determine the news. I know they have basically ignored the flooding and devistation in Nashville.

Liz, our media would never honor a hero like this..not the media we have today.  No, instead we make heroes of those who cheat on their wifes, shoot their veins full of stereroids, do illegal drugs and whatever else they might do....these are our heroes.

Liz,

It's truly great that so many folks like you are recognizing the heroism and contributions of our military vets. I am one myself having spent 25 years in the navy (a retired vet but not a hero). I recall being spit on by the public during the Viet Nam war so this change is wonderful and overdue.

However, the constant whining and carping about the mainstream media not covering stories like this is not true. NBC in particular gives stories like this very significant coverage. I saw this story on "The Nightly News with Brian Williams and the following weekend it was covered in the "In Memoriam" segment of "This Week" on ABC. I don't know who's agenda is behind this trashing of mainstream media but if it's done for any political purpose, it's a vile and undeserved charge.

One other correction: Ed Freeman died almost 2 years ago, not last Wednesday.

Thanks again for your posting this story. Ed Freeman was a hero who should never be forgotten.

Ever since I was a little girl and I learnt how my Dad, my uncle, my grandfathers, fought for our countries, I was always touched by stories such as these.  There sometimes needs to be more reminders of who our heros truly are (young and old) and they should always be honored and respected.  Thank you for a wonderful story about a wonderful hero.  It is a perfect way to end my day.
