Like a bunch of other Rainers, I attended Bloggers Connect in San Francisco yesterday - a meeting of some of the top blogging minds in the country. It was an inspirational event, with opportunities for learning, exchanging ideas, meeting up with old friends, making new acquaintances, and much more.

However, before launching into my musing on what I think I learned, I feel compelled to comment on the tragedy in Minneapolis, which certainly put a damper on my spirits last night.

I learned about this in a voice mail from my wife, currently in Michigan, which I picked up on the drive home from Orange Count Airport about 11 PM. Having lived in Minnesota we have driven across that bridge many times, and my wife, now working for a company that is based there, was on it just a couple of weeks ago. I know my immediate thoughts were of the people who were on that bridge when it collapsed and the horror that must have hit them as the bridge collapsed.

I immediately thought of Teresa Boardman, who I met in person at the event, and Bonnie Erickson, in St, Paul, and others I know through various connections who have nothing to do with the AR community. I'm sure the shock of what has happened is still vivid in their minds as Minneapolis struggles to deal with this tragedy.

I'm sure I share with everyone here a concern for those who we know that may have been impacted, or worse, hurt or killed in the bridge collapses. I hope we hear from any and all fellow Rainers that all is well with them and people they know. But know that our thoughts and prayers are with those who may have suffered in some way from this catastrophe.

Such events always bring into sharp focus how transient life can be...that at any moment tragedy can strike, and our lives and that of others we know and care about can be forever changed...without warning, or opportunity to say good-by, or to finish what we wanted to do. It reminds us of how important our friends and family are, and that these relationships are what life is all about, and that they cannot be taken for granted...not how many homes we sell, how much money we make, what possessions we acquire, or what we achieve in our lives.

This started out as a post to talk about Bloggers Connect, but having veered off into this discussion, because it could not be avoided, it somehow seems inappropriate to switch gears so abruptly and continue on with my original intent.

I'll be back.

Hi Jeff,  Sometimes with a situation like this, it puts life into perspective with reference to the things that really matter.  We are praying for all who are affected by this tragic event and pray for healing for those who were injured.

Jeff, please keep us posted because I know nothing about this. And yes, my prayers and thoughts go out to those on the bridge and their families.

On that same note, was it a big bridge?  Which bridge?  I guess I will try and search about this.  thanks

Thanks Dwayne - I was so shocked when I heard. It really saddens me. THank you for commenting.

Rob - thanks for your comments and thoughts for everyone who may be involved in some way.

Lola - thank you so much for your kind words.

Jeff - yep it IS a big bridge, adn it is all over the 'Net. The bridge runs over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis (one of the main highways - Route 35). I have been on that bridge a bunch of times but manyyears ago.

Jeff -

I got home late from BC last night, and didn't hear about it till this morning.  I too thought of my fellow rainers and even more, the familes they have there. It's truely tragic, they are all in our thoughts and prayers.  It was really great to finally meet you in person, your post really shines through the great guy that you are.  B-)

Hey Brad - thanks for your note. There are just no words to really express how horrible this is. And it unfortunately makes one wonder about the safety of so many other bridges around the country.

I'm sorry we did not get to chat more - we really should find a way to get together and talk more - will you be at the Orange Ccounty event on August 25?

Jeff, it is certainly a tragedy and the concern for those still missing is worth prayer. Your sentiment is humble and your grace to pause is understood.

I dont personally know anyone there nor did I at 911 but feel it is "family" when it is here on US soil.

My driveway backed up to 35W when I lived in So. Mpls. back in the late 70's. I have driven on that bridge a bunch of times too. What a tragedy and stuff like that should never happen.

Jeff, I saw it on the news last night.  My heart goes out to all of those that were on the bridge and their families.  I'm waiting for more information.  It's an unbelievable tragedy.

Michele - thank you so much. One cannot help feeling the sorrow over such loss even when one does not know anyone directly involved.

Jay - you are the third person I know now who has been right in that area. So ironic. Scary to think of other possibilities. I remember when the I-95 bridge collasped over the Connectivut River on the New York line years ago.

Jacqulyn - you are so right. These reminders are painful though. Thank you for your comments.

Irina - I have not watched in on the news - not sure I want to yet.

Jeff,

This is so like you, thank you. Like Brad I didn't hear about it until early this a.m. for a few minutes on the way to a short-sale class. I also thought about listening to Theresa yesterday in S.F., it must of happened about the same time she was up on stage, mid-afternoon for us in CA, rush our in Minn,

Since my computer failure yesterday/today I've only been on-line for about 5 minutes and just read your post. Very thoughtful of you. Really makes you think of priorities doesn't it. They will all be in my prayers.

Hard to imagine the loss and destruction.  My stepson and his fiancee are UMinn students - we were blessed with their safety.

After the highway collapse, J - who works summers as on University security - was part of a detail that prohibited foot traffic on other pedestrian bridges on campus.  There is a high level of concern everywhere.

Brad - so glad to meet you. Look forward to more time to get to know you.

Ah, the tragedy. In 1980 we had the Sunshine Skyway Bridge of I-275 fail due to a collision of a tanker. People who were here still remember it.

You never know each morning as your spouse, child, loved one leaves for the day, whether we'll ever see ach other again.  Be sure to kiss them, hug them, and tell them you love them. You may never have the chance again.

Jeff, Thanks for thinking of us.  Even though I traverse to the other side of the river (which Teresa says she seldom does, but I know better!), I seldom use the I35W route.  My son on the other hand includes that route as part of his regular commute.  He took a different route that day. The whole thing was such a shock, but also demonstrated the resilience of Minnesotans.  What an awesome response to a horrible tragedy.  Thanks to each of you for your kind thoughts.
