Although many people don't realize it, a home must be maintained just like a car or any other piece of equipment.  A home has many different components to it that must all work together and function perfectly to make the house live up to customer expectations.

Perhaps the easiest of home maintenance projects and one of the most important is changing the furnace filter.  The furnace filter protects the furnace blower from unwanted dust and debris and keeps the dust from blowing throughout the house.  There are two basic types of filters, standard and electrostatic.   Of the standard filters there are a vast array of different filters from the $.79 cheapies to the very expensive box filters made by the manufacturers themselves.

If you don't have to buy the manufacturers filter, buy the cheapest one you can and change it often.  Change the filter every month on the first of the month, that makes it easy to remember.  Buy 6 at a time, twice a year, always saving the last one and take it to the store so you know what size to buy each time.

Having a clean furnace filter allows the furnace, and especially the air conditioning, to breath properly and keep itself at the correct temperature for operation.  With the filter dirty, the blower is starved for air that it needs and that will shorten the life of the unit.
