15 Comments on A reunion, reconnection and finding old friends on Facebook
Hi Steve ~ I'm glad you had a nice time at your reunion. I've reconnected with many high school friends through Facebook and it's really fun to get back to my "roots". I think a lot of people experience what we have after graduation ~ Life takes us "away" as we establish our travels, careers and families, and then finally make the loop back around to reconnect with one another. It's actually kind of a perfect experience, in my opinion :) Continue to have fun with your new "old" friends!
Steve, what a great post. Your photo's tell me you've come along way from that white tuxedo! The think I like best about social networking online is it brings us closer while maintaing the lifestyles that we have pursued with the ones we love.
P.S. Speaking of looping back around, I grew up in CT, have a ton of family in Massachusetts, and I lived in Maine for 11 years. My roots are definitely back east yet I'm now living in Colorado with my husband. We plan to raise a family here in CO but we plan to go back to New England at least twice a year so we don't lose touch with my roots, family and friends there! We'd also love to have a 2nd home there someday. I just adore the charm of New England! :)
My 30th HS reunion is this year too! I wasn't planning on going, but after reading this post, I'm reconsidering whether or not to attend.
Kerry, Thanks for your comments many of your thoughts sum up my feelings quite well. We move on with life and don't miss what is not right in front of you until it is. I hope my old friends take me up on my invite, we have a nice life in the Mountains...and the city is a great place to visit, but I know I wouldn't want to live there.
Craig...You really should go, we got a hotel near by the function and took a cab to and from...this allowed for no inhibitions to slow down the fun. For the record, at 2am I snuck off to bed but found out I had missed some of the funnier moments in the wee hours of the morning.
Sounds like you had a great time! I hope some of the attendees allow you to post their photos...I bet I'll recognize a few (class of '81 here...I remember a few of you guys from way back when) We've only been gone for 10 years, but it feels like a lifetime. Scott's mom is still in 'bury, so we get down there once in a while, but rarely connect with any of our old gang.
I had to laugh when you referred to Sudbury as "the city"...you have been gone a while, huh? ;-)
Kim, I knew I would get the city comment from someone familiar with the sleepy town of Sudbury, but in my defense we stayed in Natick beside a Mall with over 100 store. When I asked for directions to a place for lunch the hotel clerk told me "take a right on Rte 9 West...go seven traffic lights and take another left...ect, this was to go less than two miles. We had fun...and I'm sorry I missed the prior reunions, I guess we (collectively) didn't look too hard for each other to have missed them.
No defense needed! It's not as sleepy as it once was, that's for sure. Rt 9? yikes...and the Natick Mall is called "The Collection" or something like that now. The one time I was there I thought I'd need a GPS just to get through the parking lot ;)
I know what you mean about time going by without touching base with folks. Good intentions seldom lead us very far. It's good to venture back for a bit, if for no other reason than to confirm that we are very much at peace with the choices we've made and to remind ourselves why our friends were our friends, no matter how much time has passed or how infrequently our paths might cross :)
(speaking of paths crossing...has yours passed with Doug Shaw in recent years? Scott and I were thinking of him not too long ago..hoping he's well)
Kim,I have renewed my reach, and hope my recent invites draw some old friends north to see my way of life now. My old friends still fit like a glove we've just been lost not really intentionally discarded.
I've enjoyed a couple reunions from my old home town of Tewksbury, MA. The first one, "ten year" was my favorite. It was the most interesting, to see how everyone had changed and to hear where they all ended up. Everyone does change and we all create a new life and build new relationships. Those wonderful times of youth were what they were and we can never recreate them, but revisiting them is a special treat.
Sharon, I am looking forward to the next get together, I hope we don't wait 5-10 years for that to happen.
Kerry.. Where in CT do you grow up. I did too... and I still live here. Well, I left and came back. Does this count?
Steve.. Glad you had a good time at your reunion. I missed a few of mine, but made it to my 30th a few years back (yes, I'm older than you..lol) and I'm glad I went. Like you, I'm glad I went, but it is good to be home too.
Val, I have some great friends where I live now, But there is nothing like the pals you spent 12 years going to school with.
