Assume the Best, Baby... Assume the Best

I have a new mantra. Assume the Best.Happy

This actually comes from my personal life where it's been sorely needed for, oh, about 43 years now, but I recently started intentionally applying it to my business life (is there really a clear division between the two anyway?)

When someone does something that doesn't make sense to you - something that irritates, inconveniences, hurts or offends you - do you automatically assume it was intentionally done to irritate, inconvenience, hurt or offend? Do you naturally filter through all the possibilities of why they did "it" and latch onto the one that makes them a bad guy or gal... and conveniently places you in the self-righteous role of victim?

I do, sometimes. Not always, but I can admit, it's often the first line of defense when I'm confused by someone else's words or actions. Since I was 13 years old I've known the power of the pout, the sulk and the whine to put the other person on the defensive (maybe that's a female thing!) and although I'd love to say I've grown out of it... well... that would be a lie. Unfortunately, variations of pouting, sulking and whining still work in the hands of a master ;-]

But we're all grown up now and operating in the real world with other imperfect human beings. And maybe it's time to give those flawed human beings in our lives the benefit of the doubt. Not just because it's the nice thing to do, but because in most cases, they deserve that benefit!

You know what? The world is not a hostile, dangerous place populated by human beings who wish to harm you. Trust in that reality and I think you'll find it to be your reality... in life, love AND business!

Assume the Best, baby, Assume the Best...

I'm another one who loves your mantra -- short, pithy, wise. Thanks!

So it's not all about me?!  It is very freeing to know the world is not picking on us--we can end the pity party and move on with high expectations of better things to come.

I actually drive my husband and family nuts because I always try to "rationalize" why something was said or done and assume it wasn't intentionally. I've gotten the sarcastice nickname "Pollyanna" at times because of that, but truthfully, this way makes me happier and I think I'm easier to be around because of that attitude. I know it's easier to be in my skin that way.

Jennifer, you are a wise young lady. I  realized after sulking, pouting and all the tools to hurt people, that life went on in their lives, but I was the one that was hurting and have it grow inside of me.  I wasn't hurting them at all. When I saw what was happening, I was able to "grow up" and instead of running and beating myself up, just asked the person outright, why they said or did what they did.  Many times they apologized and said they didn't realize what they said was hurting me. That was the end of the incident, which only took minutes, instead of me dragging it out for hours, months, even years. WOW, It even works in my marriage. Isn't that a treat?

So the world is not really out to get me? What a relief! I try to assume the best of people and their motives until proven wrong - which is rare!

Another thought... which might turn into a blog... we'll see...

If someone irritates, inconveniences, offends or hurts you... go back with a smile and a kind word... GIVE them the benefit of the doubt with your words or actions... and see how often your first impression was wrong.

Okay, so that's not blog-worthy. But in practical application, it really WORKS!

I have been reading the book, "How to win friends and influence people" and I have grown up a lot in the weeks that I have been reading it. Oh...it has not taken me weeks to read it but I have read it 2-3 times in the couple of weeks.  Tremendous book.

Glad you put this is black and white Jennifer. A few years ago I caught myself with all these negative thoughts and emotions. I shocked myself - actually scared myself! From that day on, I made a conscience effort to remember there are two sides to all stories and I cannot *assume* the worst. It's much easier today but it was a struggle at first.

Amazing how much better my day goes when I assume the best! When I step out in love and not fear! When I do this all with intention!

Thanks for the reminder!

Jennifer, these are certianly words to live by...not just in personal life and business but in the great cosmic expanse of the universe! I have found that no matter what is happening, if I approach the situation with a positive attitude and a smile, things that are already going well, continue to go well and things that have not got as well as I would have like tend to get better. Thanks for posting the idea as a good reminder!
