I know it is spring in the White mountains of New Hampshire…when the road bans are lifted, the flowers come out and when the Hammock goes up.
The Pond. As many of you know I have been working a pond for the past several years, and after the road bans are lifted the heavy equipment returns like the swallows descending on Capistrano. This is the third year of a five year excavation permit but we have serious hopes this will be the last summer for the constant dust and early morning trucks rolling past our bedroom window. With all good plans they come at a price, in this case a 50,000 square foot pond 22 feet in the center and an average of 15 feet throughout…produces 83,000 cubic yards of material that needs to be moved.
The Hammock. Nothing signals the start of warmer weather than a piece of fabric slung between two trees. The origin of the Hammock dates back to the late 1500’s when it was used by sailors to sleep in while their boat rocked (sometimes aggressively) at sea. Now a days is has come to symbolize leisure and easy living. My spot along the Pemigewasset River is a favorite place for a book and a glass of wine after a day at the office. I also have one down at the camp that the boys have taken over (any friends looking to camp on the river I got a spot for you).
The Flox. The stone walls are alive with flox this time of year, and they are a beautiful sight until the deer and Rabbits discover they are in bloom. Most of our (technical name phlox) comes back each year in a pink or violet hue and we enjoy the nice beds of flowers for the early spring…again till the wildlife devours it.
These are my three signs of spring, I hope next year the pond will be done for my son’s high school graduation party…we have set that as our excavation goal. Three years of dust- must end soon, the other signs of spring I hope will continue for a long time. It is a nice life in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, if you get the chance take a trip north and visit.
