Things you probably don't know about Summerland, British Columbia

The District of Summerland is the largest, most diverse business in town.

Ø  Only 8 cents of every tax dollar you pay goes to local government.

Ø  Unlike the Federal and Provincial Governments, local government cannot have an annual deficit. We must balance our budgets.

Ø  The District of Summerland owns 2,461 acres of property, the majority of which is undeveloped land (many small parcels which are undevelopable) and parkland.

Ø  Our crews maintain 170 km of public roads.

Ø  The pool averages 315 swimmers each day and 410 have taken swim lessons so far in 2010.

Ø  We own and operate 10 earth dams and one concrete  dam as part of our water system.

Ø  Our electrical department maintains 1158 street lights.

Ø  We own 5 rental houses. These lands are being held until we need them for other uses such as future expansion of the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Ø  It takes 204 km of water pipe to deliver water to our customers.

Ø  We receive an average of 1200 bylaw complaints in a year.

Ø  The arena averages 190 participants each day and 650 people have participated in recreation programs and special events in the first 4 months of this year.

Ø  Our Fire Department has 28 Auxiliary Firefighters.

Ø  We have 26.4 km of sidewalk that needs to be cleared every time it snows.

Ø  Our Wastewater Treatment Plant processes an average of 2 million litres of sewage each day.

Ø  Our Parks Department provides 82,000 biodegradable  doggie poop bags in a year.

Ø  We issue 750 Business Licenses in a year.

Ø  We have 5,200 utility accounts and 5,697 property tax folios.

Ø  Our Fire Department conducted 220 training events in 2009, with 93 individual certifications awarded to fire-fighters.
