Will Erosion Ruin South Florida's Beautiful Beaches?
The beautiful South Florida beaches are what attract residents, visitors and sea turtles. These beaches are also home to native flora and fauna, and protect our homes and roads from the ocean. With the influx of storms and coastal development these beaches are being negatively effected by erosion.
Many homeowner's who live in condo buildings along the beaches are worried about the erosion problems. Where they may have had room to enjoy the beach on lounge chairs, now the water leaves very little room for those chairs. The ocean is coming dangerously close to some buildings.
Over the past 10 years Palm Beach county has been working with the local and federal governments to restore our beaches. So far 75 acres of dunes and 17 miles of local beaches have been restored. With the use of beach nourishment, dune restoration, engineered structures, and inlet sand transfer Palm Beach county has made drastic strides.
Palm Beach county has many projects in the works to keep it's beaches. One of them is the South Palm Beach area from the Town of Palm Beach to Manalapan (near the Ritz Carlton). The project will start this spring with the Army Corps of Engineers starting with surveys and obtaining permits. The hope is to be able to start the construction in 2012 and completing it in a year.
