2010: The Year of turquoise and paisley Janice Roosevelt, Keller Williams, PA & DE

Long ago and far away, I wrote a design column and and one of my favorite topics was emerging trends in color.

Typically the fashion world sets the stage, followed in a season or two by the furnishings world, then accessories. It still amazing me how many different letter holders, and chatchkas I find in black and white toile.

 I'm told that this is the year of turquoise, a color both cool and warm, flattering to men and women.(NOTICE THE DRESS HERE, THEN THE TABLE TOP)   It is the color of the sea, illuminating, shimmering and serene. Not to put too fine a point on it but   PANTONE^® 15-5519 Turquoise,  is the hue.

 For sometime we've seen the combination of   shade or two of turquoise combined with brown, which btw, became the new black.  Move over brown, it's all about  cool gray come to work with any of the hot , hot colors revived from the 1970s  - lemon yellow, lime green, and all hues of purple. 

What a relief to hear  that the color of eggplant is  arriving! My home owner's association has decided to retire our current front door color of faded denim to that most vibrantly  deep purple a.k.a. aubergine. 

 It's what inspired me to paint my two Adirondack styled chairs  chartreuse  (they were made by the Amish so I'm not sure why I call them  that) , that and the fact that there was plenty of the paint in spray form on the shelf.

 It's been hard to escape all the geometric patterns, but they will become softer around the edges.

Paisley is making a comeback  as younger homeowners revive their parents and grandparents cast off furniture. I admit to liking paisley and recall a skirt and dress with a mustard background and turquoise paisley pattern fondly.  I just don't know if I would buy a pair of paisley UGGS.

Staging homes often benefit from the new color trends. A few accent pieces or candles in the newer palette send messages of  "this house is updated" to prospective buyers.
