I Do Not Have a Magnet on My Car

By
Real Estate Agent with Homesmart

I do not wear a nametag.  This should be reserved for Walmart employees and mechanics.

I do not carry a clipboard.  No good reason for this other than it always looked like a prop to me.

I do not wear a suit and tie.  A guy in a tie wants to sell you something.  I want clients and customers to feel comfortable around me.

I do not have pictures of my pets on my business cards.  "When the time comes to sell your most valuable asset, you can trust Paul Slaybaugh ... and his kitty cats!"

I do not farm my own neighborhood.  Probably a bad business decision on my part, but I never liked the idea of my neighbors ducking inside their homes when they see me walking down the street.

I do not inform buyers, "This is the kitchen!" when showing a house.  You've seen this agent on House Hunters.

I do not sell insurance or loans.  One stop shopping and Real Estate do not mix.

I do not refer clients to my buddies.  I have good friends in the inspection and lending businesses.  One is not thorough, the other charges too much.  Great guys.  Bad businessmen.

I do not turn my cell phone off.

I do not introduce myself at parties as "Paul Slaybaugh, Realtor."

I do not sell houses.  I help houses sell themselves.  I can sell you a pen if you already have four, but I cannot sell you a house that you don't want.

I do not treat lenders, title officers, stagers or contractors as if they work for me.  We're all a team, with the client as captain.

I do not put balloons on my open house signs.  I don't juggle or have pie-eating contests either.

I do not drop a famous client's name around the office.  Who really cares?

I do not attend tour groups for the scones and coffee.  The scones are great, though.

I do not advertise sales, incentives or gimmicks for the use of my services.  I'm a Realtor, not a car.

And I do not have a magnet on my car.  I might flag down a landscaper with a car magnet, but not a Realtor.

Everyone has their own standards (or quirks, if you will) on what constitutes professionalism.  I would love to hear what some of my esteemed colleagues have to say.

Paul, I am so glad that Adam pointed to this post within Hot Topics.  It is SO how I practice.  I knew your writing hit something familiar in me. (Should I be scared?!)  Now, I am off to read Jessica's counterpoint and I am fastening my seatbelt.

Paul,

It's great to hear an agent that understands this. Just wish you worked in the Charlotte, NC area! Great post!

I'm glad you found it, Elaine.  From what I have read from you, it doesn't surprise me that you are in concert with my humble list.  I don't take you for one who is big on gimmicks.  I have to say that my post pales in comparison to Jessica's take-off.  Go see it now if you feel like laughing for the next half hour.  Thanks for checking it out.

Glad you liked it, Ed.  I've got one full-time job, and it's more than enough for me.  I don't see how you can truly be effective wearing two or three different hats.  I put in a ton of hours just selling Real Estate, and there is still plenty more to learn in my chosen field without trying to expand my menu of service.  I would say that the second line that you favor should go without saying, but you and I obviously know otherwise.  My wife was an escrow officer before we had kids.  The grief that those people take is second to none.  I made a conscious choice not to treat others the way I saw my wife get treated.  Thank you for taking the time to comment, Ed.

That's a good one, Mana.  Sadly, I have cleaned more than my share of properties.  Not my preferred role, but if it takes my elbow grease to get a listing sold, I'm not above it.  Thanks for dropping by with your comment.

Okay, I didn't have time to read all of the comments....but, why don't you turn your cell phone off?  I am with you on all of the others but I definitely have hours off!  Great list!

People misinterpret that one, Diane.  I have time off as well, but the phone stays on.  If I need to let it roll to voicemail, I will, but I need to make sure that I am plugged in for emergencies.  If the same person calls 4 straight times or leaves me a few voicemails, it might not be something that can wait until morning.  I may silence my ringer, but I never turn it off.  Being available for emergencies is part of the gig.

I've never had a client ask me to watch their children, but I would draw that line, too, Dianne.  I've walked dogs around the block while agents show my listings, but I get enough toddler time with mine at home.  Thanks for adding to my list!

Good stuff Paul, I do like your wit.  As are as me, being a loan officer....

I do not wear a badge, carry a flashlight, or carry a guy.  I'm fighting underwriters, not criminals....well, most of the time:-)

Those work well, Jason.  I know plenty of folks who would expect lenders and Realtors alike to do all of those things.  Here's another one for you:

I do not carry a magic wand.  Sometimes, the acts of appraisers, underwriters and funders are out of my capable hands.

I find your comments very amusing!

But, I am curious then...how DO YOU market yourself without any tags on your car? A car is the most effective marketing tool if you do it right...

Would like your feedback and I can share my ideas with you!

Christine:  How do I market myself?  With a stamp on my forehead and a bullhorn.  When that fails, I rely on word of mouth.  I do a quality job for my clients and they pass me along to their friends and relatives.  Same as a good attorney, doctor, etc.  I never call the guy on the side of the bus for anything.

I agree that referrals are the best way to get business.  But, for agents just starting out it will take some time to cultivate clientelle.

I think that utilizing your car is the best "FREE" marketing/advertising you can give yourself! A Realtor tag or small magnet on the back of your car lets people KNOW that you are a REALTOR.

Driving in your neighborhood, going to the grocery store, drug store, doctor - you'd be surprised at the response and one person asking one simple question that leads to a listing!

Anyway, you brought up a good topic and I believe that any new Realtors will agree with me - anything "free" in today's economy is great!

I am a relatively new agent (7 months old) and I don't have a magnet on my car. I thought about getting one when I get a new picture but I am doing well to handle the leads I get now from my free website.

Friday, I received a call from a lady who works for a housing authority who is going to refer clients to me who are looking for single family rentals. She found me via my website. I received a call from another lady today who is being asked to move because she receives housing assistance. I am going to call the the complex tomorrow to see if I can offer assistance to the other tenants that are being asked to move. This lady found my website and left me with the information for a referral who's looking for a rent-to-own property. The referral called me before I could get a chance to call him. He's referring his sister to me as well.

The only money I spent on marketing was for the postage to mail the 100 free anouncement postcards to my SOI in October.

I may still get that car magnet if my new picture is cute enough. :-) Just kidding!

Well, to tell you the truth I hate car magnets & think they are gaudy...

I was talking in general about using your car as an advertising medium like putting a small Realtor logo or realtor url car tag on the back of your car that identifies you are a local REALTOR.

I couldn't agree with you more!  I agree with every single one of these - laughed quite hard about the introducing the Kitchen.  Some of those shows on TV really make us look like tools ...

Paul,  I can guess where you get that sense of humor...from Ray, I presume?  We have one Agent in town who stalks after the other Agents on Realtor tour pointing out the kitchen and all the appliances.  Also she is a "herding" animal so we mess with her and go in separate directions.  What fun...She always catches us gathering by the scones. Drat!

Toni:  Good for you!  Sounds like you are off to a great start.  There is always business for a quality agent without having to resort to megaphone tactics.  Just my humble opinion.

Christine:  That doesn't sound as garish, so I can stomach that.

Derek:  Don't they ever!  I always wonder who are the stuttering morons who got rejected if these are the best agents they could produce.  "So what do you think, guys?  Are you ready to write up an offer on this one?"  Um, they've only been in the house for 30 seconds, you knucklehead!

Suellyn:  There's one in every group.  Nothing like selling a salesman.  You just want to shake such a person to get them to understand that, believe it or not, the formica countertops are not a hot button for your client!  Besides, I see them.  I'm an agent, it's what I do!
