Technology moves so fast in today's world that I can barely keep up. In fact, I can't keep up. And I'm not sure I want to because then I might think, like a few other six billion people in the world, that just because I know about it means that I'm an expert. So false. I'm a firm believer that I don't have to have the latest and the greatest in order to be a good Realtor, a good person, a good dad to Zoey the Cool Cat. In fact, I think that being the best at just a few things is far preferable to being average — or worse! — at many things. I could buy a videocamera and start doing videos, but then I might look just like 99% of the videos on YouTube and Facebook, and I don't think that would serve a useful purpose in presenting myself in the best possible light. If you don't have the time to be the best at something, it might be better to hire someone to that something for you. If you don't have enough business (i.e., income) to pay someone to do those things, then you probably have enough time on your hands to actually learn how to do them well before you start spreading your product all over the Internet. Remember that the Internet is not forgiving, so once your crap is out there, it's pretty well out there for eternity! Moral of this post: Do it well, hire someone to do it well, or don't do it at all! Go with what you know and be the best at it, and learn new things as time allows. If you're already really busy, then you must be doing something right. Right? So don't lose focus just because some new gadget, web site, or technology is available. ♫♪♫♫♪♫

Gadgets for the sake of gadget are a waste. You make a great point about doing it well and having a plan. Thanks for the Friday reminder.
Jim, this is exactly why I haven't done any video. Any time I have tried in the past, well, let me say that my 2.5 yr old grandson could probably do a better job. I will stick with my camera.
It seems everyone is posting to youTube these days and it would be difficult to set yourself apart in this venue unless you're quirky or find an extremely creative way to grab! everyone's attention. Good information Jim!
Hi Jim, this is a very timely subject as I attended my first REBar Camp today in Toronto, the first ever in Canada.
We learned from some of the sessions today how powerful Youtube is now, right up there with Google and Facebook.
David Pylyp who is a member here on AR taught one session and he is a master at video. In fact we'd never met before but when I walked in first thing this morning I spotted him and knew who he was.
He is extremely talented with his videos and you may want to check out his posts. Very few REALTORS use them here and very few even blog.
There were lots of other ideas floated around today so I will sift through them to see if I feel if any are of value to me.
Very good advice! You're not a kiddin' about the stuff we put out on the internet being there for a very long time. How about FOREVER!
Jim, great advise. "Jack of All Trades, Master of None" is what comes to mind for me.

Jim: I'm glad to know it's not just me feeling a bit overwhelmed by technology.
You have a great point. That is precisely why we do not do videos of properties. Plus, we want buyers IN the property so they can get the "feel" of it.
Hiring someone is probably also faster and cheaper in the long run as well. I feel the pain, I can't keep up either, I don't think anyone can.
Yes, the distracting part makes sense....It think it is hard not to get distracted by new networking sites....this is why I have dropped off of Trulia pretty much...Just could not keep up with A.R., Trulia and Linked In.....I like Linked In though, very professional and not very time consuming and having a profile on Linked in is a good way to round out your networking with little effort.
Hey, Everyone - Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.
I'm trying to catch up on all my blog posts since I've been neglecting the, for good cause, though, since I've been busy.
Since this post is quite old, I won't respond to each and every comment. Rather, I'll read through all the comments and respond to any that have questions or otherwise need a response.
I'll also be by your blog soon to return the favor by reading your posts and leaving comments, too. Do unto others as they have already done unto you. lol
Again, thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. Make it a great day, a great week, a great month, and finish out 2010 on a natural high!
