snapping turtleEarly this morning, I noticed this snapping turtle walking through the grass along the road in Franklin Tn. I don't know if it's because it's mating season, or because of all of the floor waters that this guy was walking through the grass. I've never liked these predators since one killed my ducks as a child.

Just be aware that this is not a pet, and your children need to stay away. It's just one of those things that you really don't want in your yard.

My grandfather had me terrified of snapping turtles as a child growing up in West Virginia.  "They won't let go til it thunders" he used to tell me.

At my house, snakes!  We have already carted one off this year and it's barely spring.  We had more than 6 last year.

Larry,

In addition to being afraid of nothing....and no one they are almost impossible to kill.  We had three of them in our pond in CT and we wanted to make sure they didn't kill the ducks.  Well we tried moving them with a 5 ft long stick that was about 3 inches in diameter.  That turtle grabbed that stick right out of my mom's hand and threw it to the side.  Then we just covered them with metal garbage cans and very heavy rocks on top and called the wildlife folks.  They were not thrilled but they took the off to a nature preserve.  Mean things they are.

I've seen them in the water, but never in the grass. I know they eat anything that get close to their mouth.
