Perry County, Alabama offers some great opportunities to get back to nature and enjoy some time in the outdoors.
Eco-tourism is regaining popularity among many who live in big cities. There is a strong pull to return to ones roots or to introduce our children or grandchildren to what has captivated us about the outdoors.
Perry County is close to Birmingham and Tuscaloosa and presents some great opportunities for outdoor recreation for you and your loved ones.
Below are a few of the places you should visit if you have time.
Cahaba River- This pristine river offers some of the best float trips in the state, as well as fun fishing for spotted bass. Paddling or tubing the Cahaba is a real summer time treat.
Talladega National Forest- Hiking, hunting, fishing, camping, atv riding, horse riding, and birding are some of the activities you can emjoy on this federally-owned public lands. Payne Lake State Park is just over the county line in Hale County, but offers good campsites and fishing.
Perry Lakes Park/ Barton's Beach- Perry Lakes Park is an interesting place to spend a day. Miles of trails wind through the public nature preserve. The centerpiece of the park is a 100' birding tower that was constructed by Auburn's Rural Studio program. Many of the various species of trees have placards to help you identify the majestic trees, and several trees are champion trees for their species. Barton's Beach is a popular spot for people to enjoy the water and catch some rays.
Perry County's Dial and Discover Tour- Perry County's Chamber of Commerce helped develop a way for people to experience the wonderful history of our area by allowing visitors to listen to various speakers describe the local historic landmarks in our area. From the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement, Perry County has a prominent place in Alabama's history. The cost is $10 to take the tour, and you have access to the information for 7 days.
