I learned a lot from reading your post. I love horses but do not know much about them.
Very interesting for those of us that live in urban communities. Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend.
As we speak, I have a lost shoe and I'm waiting for my farrier to come and put it back on.
Luckily, I have a great farrier who apprenticed with Johnny!!!! If there's an issue, he can call Johnny and they consult. The last time, Johnny was in the area so he came by and told me to tack up the horse, this buckskin, and ride him up and down so he could watch him move under saddle. He made his recommendations and, when Wendell shod him the next time, he started gaiting so much better.
It is a good feeling to work with people you respect and trust and I'm grateful to have Wendell because it is absolutely true, just as you said...NO HOOF, NO HORSE!!!
Gita - Thanks for the comment. They are beautiful, noble animals, each one an individual horsenality.
Roy - What most people don't realize is the cost associated with the proper care of a horse.
Shoes alone got our four horses runs about $2700/year vs my $50 to $70 per year for a new pair of sneakers.
Hey Leslie - A thrown or pulled off shoe on a horse is like a flat tire on on a car. Yes you can use a boot but that's like putting that little tire on your car to get to the tire fix-it place.
Johnny and Wendell and now Mark Carbtree and the new one Johnny is apprecticing, Levi, are VALUABLE horse area assets - especially when you are trying to sell property to horse people who know and appreciate an excellent farrier.
I've always wondered why the put horseshoes on horses, thinking that if God had wanted horses to have shoes, he would have given them shoes. LOL
