Located on the south shore of Nasau County in the Town of Hempstead, the sister hamlets of Baldwin and Baldwin Harbor pride themselves on an outstanding sense of community, safety, family, and solid neighborhoods. Baldwin and Area Amenities
The Town of Hempstead's Baldwin Harbor Park is a premier recreational facility. State of the art tennis and basketball courts, soccer and baseball fields, a roller hockey rink, skate boar park, jogging and walking trails, and a young children's park overlook the Baldwin Bay Waterfront.
Jones Beach Theatre, Jones Beach, the Nassau Coliseum, the Long Island Children's Mueum, the Leroy R. and Rose W. Grumman Imax Dome Theater, and Freeport's Nautical Mile are no more than 10 minutes away.
Local and Area Shopping
The primary shopping district is along Grand Avenue, which is the main north-south artery. There are two secondary commercial routes, Merrick Road-which is an east-west artery in Baldwin, and Atlantic Avenue-which is Harbor. Local supermarkets and large stores include Associated Supermarket, Pathmark, Waldbaums, CVS, and Walgreens. Relatively new businesses on Grand Avenue inlude Best Buy, Applebees, JP Morgan Chase, and Popeye's Fried Chicken.
Area shopping includes Roosevelt Field Shopping Mall, which is the lagrest on Long Island, and Green Acres Shopping Mall, which are 15 minutes away.
Business Development and Revitalization
Business, community, and political organizations are working to revitalize and expand the local business district. Toward this end the Hempstead Town Board on April 13, 2010 adopted a proposal from Albanese Development to create a residential and retail mix on the west side of Grand Avenue, beginning just south of Baldwin Fire Department headquarters and wrapping around Merrick Road to Gale Avenue.
The developer, Albanese Development, is looking to build four stories of primarily one-bedroom apartments on top of one story of retail shops and restaurants. The apartments are billed as high-end yet affordable for local young professionals, with rents between $1, 200 and $1, 400 a month. Some two bedroom apartments are also part of the plan. The building, which would occupy the entire area between the Baldwin Fire Department headquarters and Gale Avenue, would have a 24 hour resident superintendent.
The plan also includes making traffic modifications so that residents could walk around safely in the downtown area. The storefronts would likely be set back 20 to 25 feet from the curb to provide space for pedestrians. There would be parking for tenants in a below ground lot with 140 spaces, or about one per tenant. There would also be parking for shoppers on both a rear lot and along Grand Avenue.
