Jay’s Porch © Jay MertonWhile I am enjoying my mug of organically & shade-grown, fair-trade, Guatemalan-Roast coffee, my thoughts are of Wednesday’s catastrophic collapse of the Interstate 35W Mississippi River Bridge.

I spent the entire day glued to the radio listening to the coverage of this tragedy, I couldn’t tear myself away. It was our own 9-11—‘though on a much smaller scale. We were horrified by the tragedy, buoyed by the stories of survival and the selfless actions of ordinary citizens in helping the victims, and by the extraordinary response of our emergency services personnel.

We still don’t know the extent of lives lost to this disaster, and it may be days before we do. Recovery efforts, suspended yesterday due to dangerous currents around the debris, making it too risky for divers to search. I suspect that by manipulating dams on the river they are attempting to lower the water level, and decrease the current in the search area.

When I finally stopped listening to the radio or watching TV news of the event last night, I came away with a number of things to reflect upon, ranging from very negative, to very positive: (more)

The whole event is just aweful.  I certainly hope the families find closure soon.

It looks like there will be a mad scramble to inspect bridges nationwide.  I saw an entire expose on bridge collapse in the US.  I hadn't realized how common it was when they were all listed.

There is one bridge here in Florida that has met the government's list but they won't tell us which one.  Bridges all over the country will finally get repaired in hopes that a disaster like this won't happen again.

I missed this whole tragedy as I live in a self imposed no-news bubble.  I caught a story about the tragedy online as I worked last night.  So sad.

Linda, that bridge in the Keys scares the mess out of me!  I also know Sanibel is crumbling.  I thank my stars I don't have to cross 'em.

Jay, This event reminded me of when I was living in Walnut Creek CA in 89 and the day the world shook. We lost power for only 4 hours but had radio. My grandmother in Hawaii was watching footage from the blimp who was there for the World Series. She described to me the Nimitz Freeway collapse. I couldn't imagine what she was telling me until my power was returned. It was then we knew, and we were glued to the tv for days waiting for surviors from many places. So many different people from different walks of life came together that day in Oakland and San Francisco to help each other, as is with any tradegy. I always think to  myself, why does it take an event like this for us to work together so well? (remember the photo of all the people carrying the firehose through San Francisco?)

I'm glad you, Boomer and crew are all safe!

Linda: I just heard there are some 10,000 bridges around the country that have the same rating as the 35W bridge!

Maggie: Sometimes that may be good thing!

Lysa: Human nature, I guess.

Jay, events like this have an affect on people’s lives in many ways.  For many it will cause them to look at their own lives and appreciate what they have, while for some it might even bring about change.  There will certainly be change in the lives of those who lost family members in this tragedy, my heart goes out particularly to those whose family members might have been victims of this but who have still not been found.

Jay, I was at the Inman Wednesday, and didn't hear of the bridge collapse until the ride home.  I thought of Teresa, who was also in SF for Inman, and thought about how strange and horrible it feels when you are far away from home, enjoying yourself, and then you learn something devastating has happened back at home.

Lysa: It is, albeit on a smaller scale. Extraordinary circumstances bring out like behavior I think.

George: Well said.

CJ: She called home according to Boomer, unsure of which bridge was involved. Even being right here, its hard to wrap one's brain around this.
