Five Hidden dangers of using Facebook.

I read through this article and it makes a lot of sense to me. People think that they are safe with ALL these social media sites and with that thought pattern inherently comes the scammers, criminals and the like. People are so trusting they put information about themselves out there for all the world to see. The thousands of pictures, their patterns and movements and lots of information they post on the Facebook pages not knowing there are people lurking and looking for said information to possibly harm or scam you or both.

The one that gets me is the multitudes of photos and descriptions of the places you’ve been or places where you will be heading to (on vacation for example). People are friends of “your” friends. They’re seeing this information as well and some of them may be less than honest and you’re putting yourself in a vulnerable state. You have to be vigilant. For me if there is pictures I want to share I use different means and send them to the people I want to see them. I have children of my own and on several occasions I remind them what they are putting out there is “out there”. A serious dose of common sense should be taken when using these mediums. And especially when you have younger children living in your home. Be computer smart. If there is something you don’t know question it before it becomes a problem.

Facebook is such an easy place to share photos and information.  It is hard to remember to be careful.

I don't do Facebook for some of the reasons mentioned.  Thanks for posting this as we all need constant reminders (wolf in sheep clothes)

You are absolutely correct, Robert.  I use facebook only to keep in touch with people. I would never give information about going away nor would I talk to others on line about their going away.

Robert, I have heard the horror stories.  Although they don't bother me, I just am not into what I see as a High School group.  It has it's own advantages, but to me, it does not fit into my life style.

I have been posting stuff for sale on Craigslist, boy do I get the spam from that site.    I have not got into facebook too much.   Maybe I am old fashion, if they realy want to keep in touch -- use a phone.

This is a topic that's covered fairly often. Unfortunately, given how often people still mindlessly put up things, this message is not shared often enough with enough people.

Someone I know puts it best...

If you aren't comfortable having something that you say, write, or post being plasted on the FRONT PAGE of the NY Times, don't put it on the net. There's too good of a chance that the "wrong" people will see your info. Once you release something to the Internet, esepcially when using a public forum (think: Facebook, ActiveRain, Twitter, etc.), you lose control over where it goes and who sees it.

Great post, Robert!

Great advice.  People sometimes get way too comfortable with putting too much info online.

Never ever post that you are going on vacation until you are back frm vacation.  I don't use mobile uploads either if we are out of town.  I agree that you have to be so careful with this new form of communication.

Ann. You are so correct.

Kerry. That does NOT need to be on the computer. Putting all that personal stuff out there.

Glenn. You said common sense. Sorry to say there are some who lack it.

Dan. Thanks for the reblog.

Kathy. what you put out there should be sufficient. They don't need to know the personal stuff. And if you want them to know just direct message them.

Lawrence. Very true until something happens. Then it is too late.

Katherine. Very good thing to do. Keep it very simple.

William. So you're telling me you're NOT a fan of Facebook???

Robert. I like that response. Sometimes you just need to pick up the phone.
