I'm Just Sayin' ... Be Who You Blog About

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with KGC Properties LLC, Tucson Property Management & Real Estate

I love blogging.  I love the contacts made here on Active Rain.  I also love all the information shared to help me improve as a professional and often, a better person.

So when it came to my 74 year old dad who wanted to sell his properties - and had no clue where to start to find a good Realtor in his town, of course I looked to Active Rain.  After several prospects - it's narrowed down. A few more emails and phone calls - the  "Wow you sound terrific!" Realtor meets Dad.   He "wow's" Dad too - and listing agreements signed!

Let me just say - my dad is easy.  You tell him the price, what the fees are, what he needs to do, when he needs to do it - and done.  You couldn't ask for an easier seller.  All he wants in return? Tell him what's going on - even if nothing is going on.

I should have known there might be some issues when the listing agent talks me and my dad out of a referral fee.  And then, handed us off to a "partner". Five months later it has been nothing but frustration for Dad.  No communication since the day he signed - no updates - nothing.   When he finally got hold of "Wow Realtor" - excuses and more excuses.  Of course, Dad is wondering where in the heck did I find this guy and "by the way - I am going to fire him."

If you are going to portray yourself as a client oriented, wonderful professional and you are here to gain referrals and business - bare minimum do what you say you are going to do or don't even put it out there.   I'm just sayin'.... be who you blog about.

Gabrielle you still did a great thing for your Dad, however, sometimes people are all smoke and mirrors when it comes to portraying themself.  I also think talking you out of a referral fee is just all around terrible.

Be who you are is right, I agree completely. Too bad for Dad, however, I am sure there is someone out there to help him out, good luck.

Many people blog and do not live up to their blogs. I have all original content. We live by experience. Was this person at the top of the list in blogging?

It's easy to be "all that and so much more" from behind our computers.  Authenticity in all aspects of my life is my own personal mantra.  I know it's yours too, Gabrielle.  Good luck to you and your Dad.

Wow, that does surprise me.  If you ever have need an agent in north Idaho I will gladly pay your referral fee and demonstrate what a high level of customer service looks like!

Gabrielle, this is a stinky situation.  How sad that a fellow AR would not deliver the results they promised and passed the buck.  This is why I try to connect with someone in almost every market place s I'm able to weed out the fluff.

Can't say I am surprised.  There is a lot of room for improvement in our industry and it's not all that astounding that many of the "less than" realtors & agents have made their way to Active Rain.  I had a similar experience finding a realtor to represent my son in his first home purchase.  And I didn't even ask for a referral fee.

Better luck with the next one!

Hmmm.  Maybe it's time for a rating system based on referral performance.  If that individual's true 'professionalism' came out, chances are they'd fall from grace quite quickly.  Sorry to hear about your dad's poor experience.

When someone signs a listing agreement with us, they get us.  I don't know how many agents use this technique, but I doubt it helps them build a happy client base.  I just can't see how this is good for anyone in this transaction.  Folks really do desire that old fashioned relationship with their Realtor and not the approach of being handed off to an 'associate'.

Love the post by the way...

Real Estate is a business of "Do What you Say, and Say What you Do".

We all have known agents who are just like your father's agent, they promise you the world and then disappear. Agents like this give our industry a bad name.

I would not only give that agent a call to fire him, with pleasure. I would also send his broker a note informing him of his agents lack of respect for a referral.

I hope Mr. Useless reads your post and sees how unprofessional he is viewed by his peers.

I hope your father has better luck with his next agent.

Gabrielle, What a drag...One of the facets of ActiveRain I like most is getting to know people on a deeper level that a photo and a tag line. Frankly my blog is all me me, what you see is what you get ;-)

Gabrielle:

Sometimes we listen only to what we want to hear. It is unfortunate and frustrating for you and your Dad to experience what you have but the lesson for me is to ask better questions when I refer.

Well at least he gets what he deserves, NOTHING! What a weasel. I hate dealing with agents like that. If you get a referral it's only right to pay a fee. Your handed a pay check that you never would have recieved in the first place.

Wow, I'm upset and it didn't even happen to me. Sorry, for showing my real feelings.

Hi Gabrielle,

My cousin Dan Schuman suggested that I read your blog and get to know you so I wanted to say hello and introduce myself! As far as your post...the referral fee was definitely a RED FLAG but the radio silence is ridiculous. Sorry your dad had to experience this but he will appreciate the next agent that much more!!!

Take care,

Betsy

I have sent out 1 referral on Active Rain, and have not gotten any yet.  It went great.  I interviewed several agents and asked a lot of questions, including how they gave feedback & how often before I picked an agent.  Just because they are on Active Rain does not mean that they will do the job right.

That's really sad for your Dad and the Agent not living up to his/her talk. We try our best to always follow the Golden Rule. I know you and Dad find someone who will follow-up and do a great job.
