Being new to blogging, at first I was in competition with a couple other agents in my office that live in my area.  I guess you could say I was OBSESSED with getting more points then them.  I did not sleep the first couple days trying to think of things to blog about.  Its crazy, slightly OBSESSED you think.......Well after I let that go and really started looking at ActiveRain for what its meant to be, the competition stopped for me.  Yes, that means I sleep last night.

This is a great place to talk about what is going on, to get good advice, (which I see as so very valuable), to share about things in my career/life that may help another who is struggling, maybe make them laugh, cry or even get angry and maybe, just maybe get a great referral or give one. (I think a good goal to have)

I know I am not the only one who started out this way and I am sure that it's what a lot of people do here in ActiveRain.  Don't get me wrong, I will still be counting the points, just not making it my main purpose for this forum.

I'm talking about this, because I don't think having more points than another will make me a better Realtor or get me the next big deal.  (It would be nice though) and maybe I'm way out of line here.  Let me know if I am.

So happy blogging my friends in the world wide web and have a wonderful day!

Teresa,

Great post. I had the same problem. ActiveRain can become very adictive, but I don't think its a bad thing if you are sharing information and learning something new everyday.

Check out a post I did:

I think a lot of people stat out that way.  Then is turns into sharing and education

Good post.  I agree, it should be a place for sharing ideas and learning from others.  There is enough good business for all of us in our perspective areas.

This site can be addictive and getting to the top can become an obsession but in reality it is about the sharing of information, ideas and benefiting those that visit this site.  It does not matter what people really blog about as there will be an audience for it all.  This is supposed to be a site that everyone can share and learn with but I found out how nasty the competition can be yesterday (won't go into details because it is behind me but suffice it to say that some people take things a little bit too seriously!).  Enjoy your blogging and I look forward to your posts!

Yeah I think just the profession we chose show we are competitive and then you find something like active rain were you are in control of "WINNING" and watch out :)   Great thought........

It is amazing how much information we can glean from this site, and the wonderful people you meet...(do I have enough words to get points from this comment :)

Teresa...

The very best thing we can do for ourselves is to pretend there are no points. On top of that, think about how nice things would be around here if everyone stopped checking their state to see if their little pic and name rose up the AR Point ladder :)

Hey. A girl can dream. Right? :)

Points are great, but not if they are inducing an AR member to start posting canned messages or copying & pasting.  I think you're right that quality and the AR experience should come before points.

Teresa: I blogg and at times diliberately don't get points. I speak about things while they are on my mind. Some days I go way past 10 comments not carring that I'm not going to get points. Sometimes I check my profile and say gee look at that, and am amazed that the number grew.

If we get hooked up on Blooging on AR, spending to much time, when are we going to finish our daily job?

I looked at points when I was wondering what that was all about....paying attention to your writing and the content you're writing and guess what....when you look again the points tripled. Bottom line. The only thing I see with points is keeping me up top in the localism arena for Hawaii and I guess I got there from my being an Active Rain junkie...gee, that was going the round about way for justification of the addiction, huh?

Teresa, I think it's just natural for new bloggers to compete for points when they're starting out.  It's the most noticeable when viewing profiles.  What are those numbers for?  But once a blogger becomes more established, points don't matter as much, and building relationships and business become more important.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  Welcome!
