Many of us agree with the main goals of the environmental movement. Why isn't this reflected in the approach of the Realty profession?

I was lucky enough to be involved in a career that mattered to children (I was teacher of Spanish, Sign Language and Environmental Studies for 12 years), and it was through the eyes of my students that I learned about my own inadequacies in the area of meaningful environmental stewardship. In plain English: I gave lip service about the environment, but in reality I lived a wasteful life.

By the third year of my teaching career, thanks to a wonderful set of coincidences and opportunities, my school - a private school in Central Florida, had the only interspecies communications exchange in the world between hearing children and Koko, the signing gorilla. I had the opportunity to meet with Koko on location, and Dr. Francine "Penny" Patterson, the dedicated scientist whose life mission is to save both gorillas and their natural environment.

Dr. Patterson , indeed , became my mentor and guide in this field. Our correspondence in the years between 1999 and 2002 opened my eyes and fueled my interest in going green. I learned that I could make a difference, even if only in my own household (but that is how revolutions start, right?)

"YOU MUST BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD."  - Mahatma Ghandi

So this all brings me to the following: What do we know about "Green Consumers" (Read: Home Buyers)? They are thoughtful, restrained, assiduous and overly suspicious of their movement being hijacked for a corporate profit. The law of green purchasing, in its most rigid form, can best be summed up as "Buy not, buy less, but if you must... BUY GREEN."

And that is the key: People need a place to live and every house is potential environmental safe haven for a green, environmental conscious family. Why not honor this amazing simple fact? By accepting that the environmental "issue" is part of the critical purchasing decision we will have made the first step in the right direction. Environmentally conscious people have housing needs too. They have been waiting for an honest approach from the Realty profession.

Indeed, the purchasing power of eco-friendly people is far greater than anticipated. Let us meet this fresh "green" slice of the market headfirst by acknowledging that they want to buy a product that benefits the environmental as well as satisfying their needs.

I would like to believe that "This is what I can do right now with the information I have".

Stay tuned for more...!

Best of luck!

Hi Douglas, It's nice to have another Eco Realtor on board.  You should join the Eco All Star group.  Welcome to Active Rain and I can't wait to hear what else you have to share with the community.

Reminds me of something I heard..

the "paper or plastic" question at the supermarket. If you pick the paper, they take down trees to make it and if you pick the plastic option, it could take hundreds of years to break down. Now, this may have been an old conundrum as plastic is recycled and paper bags are too! Just heard recently that there are billions of water bottles sold and the companies that recycle do not have enough raw materials to keep going at the rate they would like to. It truly is a re-education of an entire culture!

Hi Douglas...I'm glad to see the eco discussion happening here.  Here in the Bay Area, our buyers and sellers are way ahead of the curve on their eco-telligence, so realtors must be too.  Many buyers are aksing to mainly see homes that are built green and discussing ways to renovate homes to higher green standards.  Lawton Associates, the boutique firm I work for in Berkeley, has also developed green buildings, including the acclaimed Gate 48 development.  They are even offering a great Prius deal to buyers.  When we advertise, we always play up the proximity to BART and other public transportation.  Remember, a lot of people here choose not to own cars.  In addition, many of us here make sure to use recycled paper for our cards and communications, some

I am particularly interested in the negative comments people have about Eco-Realty.  I am in Germany at the moment and everything that I have written about is pretty much mandatory over here.  I do not want to give the impression that I am a goody two-shoes do gooder, however, some of the more ardent anti-environmental messages have surprised me.  Everything I have written about is always hinging on the fact that going green is profitable for everyone involved.  That's the thing, it really is.

In Europe the main concept is that they sell you basically a farm, not a house.  They sell you the land the house is on, the water and air quality (indoor and outdoor) that comes along with the house and the energy efficiency of the overall property.  People choose to live in healthier houses, and they pay more for them.

All of these mcMansions here in Florida are distressing--talk about waste!! I live in a modest (by US standards) home & by reallocating space & how we use the house, I've decided that the house is plenty large for us (a family of three).  It takes less money to maintain, paint, furnish, cool, heat, etc.  FOr many, many years, my husband & I have recycled; he has a "worm farm" where we take our composting, etc.  His worms, literally, have made dirt!  Most people that know about this think it's "an odd hobby" .  Maybe to some, but it's ecologically sound.  We've just been a head of the times!

Dalia - being a head of the times is the simple solution we all need.  I applaud your desire to be part of the solution.

Dalia - This is kind of a 'late thought.'  I have kept forgetting to ask you about your worm farm.  When you say that the worms are literally creating dirt...is it just their waste materials.  Is it part of the food, as well?  It certainly is ecologically sound, as you put it.

I'd just  like some more information.

Thanks again :)

This was it.  It wasn't quite as bad as I thought.  I mean, not worth twenty AR lashes or anything. :)

I just realized I wrote "pots" rather than post and of course spell check can't even help with that one... and I get an error with spell check on ActiveRain when I use FF as my browser...

This was a perfectly respectable first post on ActiveRain... better than mine (from about one year earlier)  which basically said: "duh!"

Maureen- I highly doubt your first blog was "duh!"  I will go and check your blogs and go for the first one (date wise).  I don't know if you took your first one out.

Pots, doyglas and suckpuppets.

There is irony or Freudian Slips in there :)
