Stop George Bushing All Over Me- A Lesson in Listening

Former president George Bush Sr. gives us a great example to aid in avoiding any potential future embarrassment when speaking with others.  We have all no doubt had embarrassing moments.  Mr. Bush's happened while suffering from the flu.  While dining with the Prime Minister on beef steak (French-style), he became violently ill and projectile vomited all over then Japanese Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa.  You may ask what does this have to do with anything!?!  No doubt this was one of George Bush's most embarrassing moments.  This is what it has felt like when someone will not stop talking and listen to what we are saying.  They are SO unaware and intent to tell you what they know, they simply spew all over us.

By actively listening, we can connect our skills and experience to others' dreams, desires, and discontents. We are most effective when others know we are listening and then sharing our opinion if asked.  Through restatement, we show we want to understand.  This is the qickest way into "the circle of trust."

What is more important?  Is it the speaker, the message, or the audience?  It is the audience by far.  And we've already touched on those who love to hear themselves talk.  They are so psyched up they have an opportunity to show how smart they are.  They are so excited about their message they forget about the audience.  This is why Henry David Thoreau said, "It is a luxury to be understood."  For many, these "George Bushers" cannot wait until you actually stop talking.  They can be like puppies whose owners just arrived home from a long day.  They jump all over us and may even give us something to clean up.  So for cripes sake, stop George Bush'ing all over people.  Slow down and take the long view in cultivating lasting relationships.
