Columbus OhioColumbus Ohio is the big city that no one expects. Columbus is the 15th largest city in the United States. Columbus is the largest city in Ohio and the state capital.

Columbus is unique for a city of it's size in that it is still growing, geographically and populationwise.

Columbus is in Central Ohio at the convergence of the Olentangy and Scioto Rivers.  Downtown Columbus sits on the east side of the River.

Interesting, historic urban residential neighborhoods in Columbus include German Village, Victorian Village, Italian Village, Olde Towne East and Merion Village.

There are condos and lofts in downtown Columbus for true urban dwelling, many newly built and others in reclaimed industrial spaces.

The Short North, the Brewery District and the Arena District are among Columbus most entertaining neighborhoods.  The Shorth North is recognized nationally for it's art galleries.

Some parts of the City of Columbus are very suburban in feel.  As the city of Columbus grew it annexed property in many suburban Central Ohio school districts.  City of Columbus neighborhoods are occasionally still bordered by farm fields.

THe Ohio State University is just one of many schools in Columbus including Columbus State University, Franklin University, Capital Law School, Columbus College of Art and Design and Ohio Dominican University.

Historically Columbus  was known as "The Buggy City" because of the 12 buggy works  located in the city. Other nicknames include "The Arch City" and "The Discovery City." In recent years replicas of the arches that lit the city long ago were placed in the Short North.  "Cap City is used to describe the capital of the state but recently "The Cap" between the Short North and downtown has given this name new meaning.  The Cap are stores and  restuarants built on a cap over a highway, 670.

Columbus Ohio  has a symphony orchestra, a ballet company, Balletmet and Opera Columbus.  Columbus museums include The Art Museseum , The Wexner Center,  The Ohio State Historical Museum and the Ohio Historical Village.  A replica of Christopher Columbus ship the Santa Maria is a museum downtown on the Scioto River.  The Center of Science and Industry (COSI) is a city treasure.

Columbus Metro Parks features fourteen natural parks with more than 22,500 acres of land and water in seven Central Ohio counties for people to  enjoy. City of Columbus Parks include the beautiful Park of Roses at Whetstone Park on the north side in Clintonville, Franklin Park Conservatory east of downtown, Schiller Park in German Village and Goodale Park at the edge of Victorian Village among others. List of City of Columbus Parks The Columbus Recreation and Parks Division, Columbus Municipal Golf operates seven public golf courses in Columbus.  The well known Columbus Zoo is owned by the city too.  Jack Hanna brought the Columbus Zoo to America on shows like The Tonight Show and David Letterman's show.

Nice write up Maureen. The greater Columbus area is a great one to work and live. I think you did a great write-up, but I think I would have played-up the growth more -- if I'm not mistaken isn't Columbus one of the very few Midwest cities to continue experiencing population growth.

My Delaware post will be coming soon.

Thanks for the comment Toby. I thought "Columbus is unique for a city of it's size in that it is still growing, geographically and populationwise." kinda covered your critique of "I would have played-up the growth more."

Maureen - Sorry, not meant to be a major critique and I agree you did it. I would have just played it up more, but it's your blog and not mine

I've done whole entries on the growth of Columbus on Columbus Best Blog and could at some point on this blog.  This was an overview of Columbus.  Lots of aspects for the public and really one of the only a few entries on my public Active Rain Blog as I have mostly blogged to the industry here.  Thanks for reading it and your comments.
