MONTGOMERY, TEXAS ~ BIRTHPLACE OF THE TEXAS FLAG! Montgomery, Texas located due northwest of Houston. Montgomery was once a tiny town that served as a stagecoach line between Huntsville and Houston. Many weary travelers stayed in Montgomery with such noted folks such as Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston.
Originally, Montgomery was the county seat for Montgomery County and the first courthouse was built in 1838. When the railroad was moved to Conroe which is east of Montgomery, Conroe then became the county seat and still is today.
Dr. Charles B. Stewart drew a free-hand version of what we know as our Texas flag on a piece of linen back in 1838. This original is now kept safely in the Sam Houston Library in Huntsville, Texas. Dr. Stewart lived and worked in Montgomery and is why this tiny little town has been named as the birthplace of the Texas flag.
