There was a mini-meet-up of AR bloggers yesterday in Washington, DC. - I got together with Margaret Rome (Baltimore, MD), Jay and Monika McGillicuddy (New Hampshire), Pat Kennedy (Washington, DC) and Emily Link (Thousand Oaks, CA). Most of us were in town for the NAR and CRS meetings, but Margaret decided to come visit because, well, she could and she wanted to.

You can read about it in posts by Pat Kennedy and Emily Link

Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, DC

This is soon to be followed by a more formal, planned gathering tomorrow night at Yanni's Greek Taverna at 3500 Connecticut Avenue, NW at 6:30 - thanks to Pat Kennedy for coordinating. I had great fun with Pat today, touring some higher end Washington, DC homes on broker tour. We had a great conversation, saw some beautiful homes, and of course made a stop at a home that was serving lunch...we're REALTORS, rights?

Powerful relationships and friendships get built on AR - it was abundantly clear today. There is, of course, the common bond of blogging on AR.

Some have more points than others, or are more involved or consistent in their blogging

Folks have different business models, philosophies, and niches

The interior at the MarriottBut something magical happens when you step out from behind the computer into the real world and touch reality with a fellow blogger, well known to you or otherwise.

Points are irrelevant. Rank in your state is irrelevant. Whether you are a buyer agent, listing agent, or part of the administration of a local or state board or other professional organization, or not, is unimportant.

What IS important, and of the greatest value, is the relationship being forged, and certainly the learning and sharing that comes naturally from these in-person gatherings. A desire to learn from others, to seek their opinions, gain their support, and share stories.

We all shared some ideas with Emily who is on a panel later this week on Agent-to-Agent Referrals for WCR. That sort of dialog is much more powerful than on-line.

And I had an extra hour or so to talk with Margaret before she headed back to Baltimore - shop talk about listing homes, on-line marketing and marketing ideas, and many other topics. That is special time to be treasured.

Are relationships built on-line valuable? Indeed. But don't miss out on the chance to take these relationships to a higher level in person. They will serve you well in more ways than you can imagine.

My camera was dead so I let everyone else take pics. Enjoy them on their posts noted above!

Gotta go - heading off to Yanni's Greek Taverna for more fun with AR friends.

Cheers

That Wardman Park Marriot is a huge hotel.  I used to go there for some conferences.  Back on topic, personally relationships due hold more stock than online relationships.  I hope that future generations who are growing up in this electronic society don't forget about the importance of getting face to face.

Jeff, I was supposed to be there this evening, but have come down with a sinus infection so I am unable. I am sadder than you can imagine. I wanted to meet all of these fantastic people IRL!

Dinnertime in SD right now, and you are making me hungry. Sounds like it was a lot of fun. And, they do say that the best careers are the ones that are fun for you and do not seem much like work! See you soon.

Judy - it has been great fun. I learned there are some other folks here from AR so hope to see them too before I head back to the left coast.

BethAnn - I think it can be easy to forget in thie day and age of the Internet. But it is certainly possible to forge great relationships on-line, however nothing beats face-to-face.

James - Agreed. Yanni's ws a great place to meet. It was fun meeting you and getting to know you and your market here. I love visiting DC.

George - gee, Linda Davis came all the way down from CT!!

I agree, its ALL about who you know in the industry!  ONE good relationship can make a world of difference, finding that "ONE" is the challenge.

Jeff,

It is all about the relationship, and the face to face meeting makes it that much better.  Nothing can come close to that!  Thanks for expressing this so eloquently.  All the best.

Wish I could have attended.  You are soooo right.  Building relationships face to face is still the best way to meet folks.  We have all this wonderful technology but the trust and confidence level goes up about a bizillion percent for me when I shake someones hand.  Thanks for another great post.

It is all about relationships. I go to Brokers Open Houses more for the talk than the homes.

It's all about the relationships! And ActiveRain has been such a great catalyst to help form them!

Hey, when you see Nevin in San Diego next week, make sure he brings me back some souveniers this time!

He totally blew me off last time he met you out there!

Hey, I'm seconding Craig's request for a souvenier from your area!  Nevin ROCKS, doesn't he?!  He travels 3 hours for a Closing and travels from the east coast to the west to meet up with his AR peeps!

Great group you met up with in DC too!  I'm incredibly green with envy!  Not only for you meeting them but, that they got to meet you too.

It is always akward when you take the relationship from the computer to face to face, but fun too.  That is how I met my wife.

Wow!  It is great that you were able to get together even with the distance!  I hope the time difference isn't getting you.

Hi all,

I'm spoiled since I live in Washington,DC and the Mid Year is always here. Every year. Every May.  I've been attending for at least 4 or 5 years.  Every year, I tell my buddies in the office, and every year, I end up going alone.

There's so much great information coming at us in this venue.  And it's very cool to hear people speak that I know through the online world (Matt was out there, right?).

Kudos to those of you who took time off and ventured here. I suspect if I pretended I was out of state and just fully attended, I'd get even more out of it.  In the meatime, I'll continue to see if I can get another few people to come w/ me next year.

What a lucky guy you are Jeff. to be able to meet people in person that you could share ideas with.  I have been in that situation a few times this year, and think is is priceless.
