Save The Whales Day May 23, 2010

Thanks to Christine Hynes from Laguna Beach for sharing this valuable date with us. On May 23, 2010 the WAN Conservancy will be holding demonstrations up and down the California Coast to oppose a proposition made to allow commercial whale hunting to resume.

Over 25 years ago a moratorium to prevent commercial whale hunting was enacted. With this moratorium, many of the whale species that were threatened to become extinct have had the opportunity to make a slow recovery. There is now a proposal on the table to lift the moratorium. The United States is currently leading an effort to broker an agreement to allow the commercial hunting of whales for the first time since 1986.

The California Gray Whale is one of the species that will be greatly affected if commercial whaling is resumed. The Gray Whale is the most ancient Baleen Whaleson this earth; with this proposal, the potential to find this animal extinct is eminent. Research of these beautiful creatures show their numbers have decreased over the last four years. By permitting commercial whaling without proper determination of actual numbers of each species promotes the potential to put these animals back on the brink of extinction.

Please sign the petition opposing this agreement. We must hold the President to his promise to continue to be a leader in conservation. In his campaign specifically stating "allowing Japan to continue commercial whalingis unacceptable." You may also contact the White House at 202-456-1111. Express your opposition to this detrimental proposal.

Save The Whales Day in San Diegowill begin at 10:00 am at the North Embarcadero. Show your support for saving these beautiful creatures. There will be many locations participating in this rally. If you are not in San Diego or need more information, visit the demonstration page for WAN Conservancy.
