I just couldn't believe what I read this morning. Eric Holder, the US Attorney General, says that he hasn't yet read the Arizona Immigration Law even though he has come out saying that he thinks it might be unconstitutional and would lead to racial profiling.
"I've just expressed concerns on the basis of what I've heard about the law. But I'm not in a position to say at this point, not having read the law, not having had the chance to interact with people are doing the review, exactly what my position is," Mr. Holder told the House Judiciary Committee
It gets better. It seems like he's based his opinions so far on what he's read about it in the newspapers and what he saw being said about it on TV.
When asked by Poe how he could have constitutional concerns about a law he has not read, Holder said: "Well, what I've said is that I've not made up my mind. I've only made the comments that I've made on the basis of things that I've been able to glean by reading newspaper accounts, obviously, television, talking to people who are on the review panel...looking at the law."
So I looked up the text of the billand found it to be only 16 pages written in pretty common everyday English. It wasn't some contorted legalese that has to be deciphered. I read it in about ten minutes. They even put out a nice summary sheet that makes it even easier to study it.
Maybe I'm expecting too much from the people in Washington.
I wonder if this new Supreme Court nominee has taken time to read the Constitution yet? Maybe she will make rulings on the law based on what she heard about it on TV and in the newspapers.
I couldn't believe the stories I have linked here so I tracked down the video of his testimony. All I can say is, Unbelievable.
Here's the assistant Secretary of State going on about the law and when asked point blank if he has read the 10 page law, he says no. It doesn't seem to really bother him either.
