" Stylin's just another word to describe just who I am,
The da'light vu writin screen's hot as hell but it ain't free,no no
The tablet does most everything, Lord, and makes it all a breeze,
Signing contracts on the run is as smart as it can be.
Standing out amongst the crowd, Me and My Tablet PC "

Every time I think about the words "Me and My Tablet PC", that song comes into my head . I hope it brings back memories to you as well.

This article is not about the song but is about my Tablet PC and why I love using it versus a regular notebook, especially on a listing presentation.

One of the best advantages of this tablet over a notebook is the weight. It is 3.1 lbs . I will list for you the actual specifications later on but allow me to talk about how I use it and why I prefer the Tablet over a regular notebook.

The weight affords easy portability. When I go into a clients home, the set up is a simple as taking it out of my case. Once I turn it one, which is very quick to load my programs and with the air card I have immediate Internet access. One of the programs that happened to come with this upgrade version, is Microsoft One Note. This is just simple note taking using a stylus just as you would a regular pad and pen. The difference here is that it is stored so what ever I write is already to load in my client files. My handwriting can be stored or converted to text.  As I walk around the house, I takes notes on every  thing I see. I do a thorough visual inspection not only early on, but once again in a more formal manner and I get to to that when I discuss the forms. After I do my walk around and ask questions, all taken as notes, I am ready to discuss with the Seller how I do business

At this point I access the Internet and pull up my listing presentation. It is virtually nothing about me and all about the market condition, pricingetc. I skip through it pretty quickly . Next, I have already pre-downloaded all the comp properties  from the MLSand have them ready full screen ( which rotates to portrait view so they can read like an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.  Usually I will mention all but select a few that they might be familiar with. I pull them up on the screen and go through all the pictures and property details. I tell them I have a hard copy already printed for them inmy CMA presentation book, which I now hand them.

My actual Listing presentation is already prepared and bound as a book with CD insertedin the back with my 100% guarantee printed on the inside back cover. The hard bound covers are Gold Stamp embossed to be very impressive.

I ask what questions they have and go back to the PC to record everything. At this point the Tablet has been mostly for show. Prior to the appointment, I downloaded all the contracts and disclosures in the Windows Journal section of the PC. Once I open their file, they are all there ready to be signed. I hand fill in anything on the Listing agreement that I had not filled in prior and hand the tablet with the stylus to the sellers and ask them to sign on the line. They watched me take notes and also edit the pre-prepared contracts with my stylus pen. Any place I write over the pre-printed section, they simply initial right on the contract. Once they take the tablet and stylus , the listing is mine.

The law requires the Sellers to have a have copy of anything they sign. I ask them if they use e-mail and usually they do. I get their e-mail address and e-mail the contracts right then to their e-mail and ask if they would like me to print them using my bluetooth wireless printer. Most of the time they have pretty good printers so it saves me a lot of time. I have my Bluetoooth Hp, wireless printer on and ready and at lightning speed I can make the sellers copy of any or all the paper work just signed.

I also give to the Sellers a presentation folder with partitions for contracts, disclosures, escrow documents etc. I pre-print all the disclosure documents in advance and they already for them to fill in and complete. I go over what each form is for briefly and then tell them to work on the disclosures after I have gone and I will pick it up in a day or so. A few of the important ones are filled in and signed right on the computer, like Agency Disclosure, FIRPTA, etc.

Other really neat features of My Tablet PC include , handwritten e-mail as the witting capabilities extend through all Microsoft Office programs. Being able to record conversations, rotating the screen too read and write like a tablet pad, an extended batter that is flat and unobtrusive that give almost 8 hours of use of battery power.

Other features that make my Tablet a standout is that I love using the Tablet PC at meetings and writing of notes and then saving as documents. I also have a snipping tool to cut and past articles or information from the Internet and add to documents. I can  edit documents in my own handwriting, even making comments to other people's work in my own handwriting and sending the document back via e-mail. (very handy for draft discussions with my clients.

The Tablet PC has all the expected and normal functions of a regular notebook and all the enhanced features unique to the tablet in addition.

My favorite feature that is unique to this tablet is the password program called OmniPass. When a field requires a username and password, Omnipass is alerted and there is a  key shaped icon that when activated remembers the username and password, fills it in automatically in encrypted code and you are logged in to your site, taking no further steps yourself.

All in all, the investment of being able to use my tablet in daylight/sunlight, where other screens are not viewable gives me the versatility to even take it the beach. I haven't done that as yet but I have worked outside on my lounger and with my ability to record my voice and change it the the written work, blogging takes on a whole lot more possibilities. Doing it outside in the fresh air and sunlight instead of at my desk is liberating. I would never trade the functionality of my Tablet PC for a regular notebook. It just works too well on so many tasks.

I said I would include the Technical Specifications for those of you that might be interested in the details.

68 Comments on Me and My Tablet PC.................To the Melody of "Me and Bobby McGee"

William... when Apple comes out with a tablet PC, I'm all over it.

08/04/2007 01:11 PM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

Hi William,

Thank you for sharing how you use and why you like your Tablet PC. I will undoubtedly need to replace my laptop within the year, and have been wanting to know more about how well Tablets actually perform in the field. There are currently only a couple of agents I know of in my market using them, so it's great to get your feedback.

Would you mind sharing where you bought it and how much you paid?

Thanks!

Great post, I have been thinking about the Tablet for some time and now I know when I purchase I will definetly get the Tablet.  I liked the way you walked through from beginning to end your listing process.

I love your detailed post on your presentation for the listing as well as the perks for the tablet pc. I bookmarked for the day I might invest in one.

Hi Jeff, I miss talking to you. I spoke about yesterday to Marlene Bridges. Seems you are loved by so many many people.

I will say this Jeff, If The Mac comes out with a Tablet PC, I will stand in line over night if need to be to be there first. I love the tablet but I don't like the Windows Operating System. I tried to give up the tablet, I was so close after to taking to you about the MAC. I was in the Apple Store at east a dozen times, trying to convince myself that I could give up the tablet. Having used the prior version for over 3 years, was just spoiled with what I could I do with it. I loved the MAC , it was so what I wanted but I couldn't give up then TABLET so I went ahead and bought the new one. It is everything I wanted in a Tablet and more.

Hi Linda, I love it and use it and it just gives and gives and giives so much. Being creative, you can come up with so many easy solutions for RealEstate. It was made for the way most of work.

Hi Beth, I wouldn't mind at all. I have tried them all and the one that captured my imagination is the same company that manufactured  me my first Tablet PS over 4 years ago. Still the company I would recommend. MotionComputing.com. The way I configured my Tablet, the cost was just over $3800. I went for the works and glad I did. The LE1600 has just been replaced with the Le1700,modified for Vista. I prefer XP and don't mind that 4 months into my purchase, the company changed it. Mine came with a guarantee that they would upgrade when and if I decide to go to Vista. I even have my new Discs of Vista when I am ready. Too many bugs in it and I will stay with XP for now.

I know that you can buy cheaper, but you can't by better in my estimation. Since I am a long time user, I am stuck with knowing the difference.

Ooh, gonna have to get busy. I know what you mean about being stuck with knowing the difference. I appreciate the info, I hope Motion appreciates the great testimonial ;^). I'm bookmarking this too.

Just bought my first tablet, a Motion.  Then got a X41 for a new home subdivision, and one of my agents got a Gateway.  Verizon Broadband card, and VREO for contracts, fax, and email vault.  I'm in love.  Clients love the floorplans and plats we carry.  Email all docs, and VREO locks them for no changes.  I'm having a blast!!  Good post

08/04/2007 02:18 PM by Greg Fox (Realty World Wichita)

Oh, just remembered, my agent with the Gateway?  On Ebay, $600 with a 3 yr warranty, and a 14" screen!!!  Built in DVD and burner.

08/04/2007 02:19 PM by Greg Fox (Realty World Wichita)

I should call them and tell them , maybe I will get a something for free,LOL I am sure they appreciate it but in many ways, they make such a difference, they deserve the testimonial. Yep, they are that good! Thanks for commenting Jeff.

No one seems to care about me putting the words to Janis Joplin's song though, lol

Hi Beth, there are other tablets that you can buy for less. Motion is the one that developed the technology and they just seem to do it better.

The very first Tablet though was made by Apple called the Newton, it disappeared when no one would buy it. Years and years ago. I was in the presentation when Steve Jobs introduced it. It was a larger version that an PDA but smaller than an average computer. I wished they had kept it and developed the line. Today , it would be the Winner by a mile.

Hi Greg,

I just had my first tablet reconditioned and it is going back for a new video card. It now has a new 60 gig hard drive and I may end up selling it, I don't need two. Some lucky REALTOR will get a real bargain. I have no idea what I will sell it for but it was top of the line and likely for under a grand. It has the new keyboard in the cover, CD/DVD, etc.

It was the same one marketed by Gateway, Motion made it for them. They didn't offer the add ons which is why I bought it direct from Motion

08/04/2007 02:31 PM by San Diego Real Estate Voice authored by William Johnson GRI CRS e-PRO (RE/MAX Associates)

Not true William, I care about Janis, and Bobby McGee too - you just distracted me with all these juicy facts!

I do like the idea of something sized between a PDA and the current size. I'm using my Treo more and more. Smaller's not better for everything, but it does mean I'd carry and use it more.

08/04/2007 02:34 PM by Beth Larsen, Sedona Arizona (RE/MAX Sedona)

Hi Beth, Just kidding of course . I wish I were more of a poet because then I think I would have had really had some great words to sub with the melody. I thought it might get more attention if I mentioned the song , then of course had to do something with it to tie it in. No secrets here on ActiveRain, lol I am sure glad you liked the piece and hopefully it will be meaningful for you.

Bill, I love my motion computer, I posted on it and actually won the Inman Contest for Best Technology and Time Saving Tools. I love my motion, this is a great reminder for people needing to purchase notebooks or laptops. I couldn't live without mine. YOu did a excellent job on the screen capture.

I have wished I could use it on activerain, because it is so easy. Written many contracts on it. When I got mine in 2005 it was way more expensive.

I like One Note a lot, and use it with my laptop to type notes during conferences, classes, etc. It's so easy to mark some as To Dos, others as web sites to browse, etc. Also easy to look back for a particular reference.

I love technology and appreciated your insights.  One quick question and/or concern...how hot does your tablet get after say an hour?  One of the reasons I had opted for the more expensive Sony Vaio notebook was that it ran substantially cooler then other notebooks.  But I'm intrigued about the functionality of your tablet if overheating isn't an issue.

William, I've had one for years (toshiba), but I've never wanted to sing about it.... Sounds like you really have yours working well for you. I just can't get away from the desktop and use the laptop as my primary.

William - I have a Gateway Tablet and love it - but have to say I have been too lazy to learn how to do everything I am able to do with it.  You have inspired me to get cracking and get this learned.  I still use paper for lisings instead of the tablet, largely because I am afraid it isn't going to preserve the sigs.  Thanks for motivating me! Good Morning Liz, I have a lot of responses to answer but I thought I might get a message quickly to you about something you mentioned.

Once you secure the signatures, e-mail the contract to the Seller's computer. Verify it arrived before you consider leaving. Do the same thing to your self. Once I have secured signatures, I make sure we all have the copies needed, including your office transaction coordinator. I happen to use RELAY ( on line Transaction coordination) and can send the contracts there for safe keeping via e-mail. ( a sort of an e-fax type of transaction )Once I have the distribution completed, I delete all the contracts from my computer. I do that for security reasons. My tablet requires my thumb print to open it and with Omni pass, it can not be opened without the thumb print scan. That said, nothing is foolproof, so I don't rely on an false security in todays world. That is why it is important to remove those contracts. it is quite easy to download them to CD. RELAY provides for this at the end of the transaction but you can do yourself anytime. There is also  a service you can subscribe to that is a SECURE VAULT. It is about $29.00 a month. RELAY which is for all members of NAR and works with your standard forms already accessible in the program, is at most $149 per year. Some Associations around the US are making it a member benefit so it is free. Check your local or state association. Our association is making it free in Jan 2008. Very cool stuff.

Once you get the hand of this, it is easy and makes you look a lot more advanced in front of your client than the simple technology you used to do it.

Hi Bill, thanks for commenting. Do you have interest in a tablet pc as to its functionality or it is listing my process that you are interested in, :-) ? If it is my process, beyond a discussion, it is my trade secret on how I do it. It did take me months to learn it, no one teaches it, unfortuneatly-would guess there is no market for it. One of my good friends purchased one and she is developing her own system as well. It is a laborious process to prepare.  I do it this way because it sets me apart from others. As to the Tablet PC itself and how it functions, that is not. I would be glad to speak to you about it, though. I will send you an e-mail later today with a page from a contract signed on the tablet out of the Windows Journal so you can how it looks and understand how you received it. It will be a page with just intials.

William this information is really helpful.  I use a laptop right now but it does not make sense for me to take it to a client.  The Tablet seems perfect.

Do you use a desktop or a laptop for any of your other work or do you use your Tablet for all your computer work.  Also, how is the internet connection.  Ever had a problem with connection when you were with a client?

08/05/2007 02:37 PM by Patrick Canavan - Orange County Real Estate Voice (Prudential California Realty)

Hi William - I have one more question about the printer.  Do you use a portable printer or do you use your client's printer?

08/05/2007 03:04 PM by Patrick Canavan - Orange County Real Estate Voice (Prudential California Realty)

Hi William - thanks for the feedback...I really WAS inspired, because I have been sitting through the tutorials since.  I'm good on everything, but for one thing....if I have my laptop with me at a listing appt and need the sellers to sign on the spot, ZIPforms doesn't allow for signatures.  I'm not really into the mode of bringing a printer as well, and one of the reasons I wanted the tablet was to have the ability to have people sign contracts on the spot.  Is there a program I'm missing?  I went to Journal as you said and tried to import it but that didn't work.  There must be a software to allow that, but can't find it.  I appreciate the help - no hurry!  Liz (I would've sent you an email but figured the answer could be helpful to others as well!)

08/05/2007 03:42 PM by Liz Foley (Town Square Realty Group)

Hello Patrick,

The last question I will answer first.

I use an hp 460 series mobile printer. It is bluetooth and/or direct USB cable, both work well.

In the first comment post you asked about a desktop or laptop for other work. I use have a Docking station for all my peripherals and use my Tablet PC also as my desk top. Because it has only a 12" viewing screen , perfect for up close work but not as a desk top, I use a large Desktop Monitor.

It can replicate the screen or give me a separate screen (platform) from which to work. One of the nice features of the Tablet is what they call the Dashboard. It shows that you can use an extra monitor  to be a mirror image or a separate working screen. What is cool about that is this. Lets suppose you are in Outlook and going through your e-mails. If you want to respond to one, you open your new e-mail image frame and with your mouse, you can drag it to the blank screen. Drag it right off the Tablet PC screen and as you do , it will appear on the monitor. You can compose and send , all the while looking at your other e-mails or look up contacts, or to-do list, what ever the function may be on the Tablet screen. The screen you are working on (separate  monitor)  is not bothered by the other screen or what ever else you need or want to do. It is like having two computers going at once. You would have to see it to understand just how cleaver this tool is. But let me tell you this as well. It works on desktops , notebooks, whatever. It is not unique to the tablet. The tablet just helps you to understand that it exists as a feature by showing you the dashboard. I would venture to say that most tablet users have no idea of its availability to them. Whoever dreamed up the the Windows XP for Tablet, had themselves in mind. There are so many features that are buried in this thing and you have play around with it to locate a lot of the col features.

I have had no less than a 50 agents ask me, "what software do I have to buy to open up my real estate contracts to be able to write on them Fill in and sign on them). My answer is none, it is all built in. Just no one to explain it. Windows Journal is found with the list of printer or printers you have drivers for. If you open your forms software (contracts and disclosures), no where does it say merge with Windows Journal. If you Open Windows Journal, there is no way to go and retreive  the contracts. So, How do they get there. Easy as 1, 2 3. Pull up the forms software that you want and  hit the print button. Select the printer ( this time though, select Windows Journal instead of your usual printer selection). All the contracts instead of being printed go to the Journal that opens and they are right before your eyes. Journal is a program that with your stylus, you can write on the documents. Select the document you want to sign or select them all and as you arrow down, stop when you see initial or sign. It is that simple. The problem is and there always is one, no one explains it so a lay person can locate it. It comes from experience and figuring it out, or asking someone that knows how to use a Tablet PC. :-)

No Internet problems Patrick. In addition to the aircard, I have a back up stem. I have a mobile modem ( not standard with the table where it is with a notebook). the land connection is much slower but I have had difficulties with the aircard before. I am getting a new one from Verizon as I have switched over my phones there. Their aircard is supposed to be pretty good. You can also have a client meet you at a Starbucks, but many of them now charge for their WiFi Access now. They used to give it away free. But like all things today, they want to sell you coffee, and Internet service now. There are some Internet cafe's around but not nearly as many as there used to be. Just being nearby often gave to you an Internet connection.

William,

I love my Tablet too......everything you wrote is what I do, except that great sounding presentation file.........I got mine several months ago and it took me quite awhile to figure out how to get the contract from Winforms onto "Journal" because I didn't know that's what I was supposed to do :)

Isn't it amazing once we learn it's so easy....and yes, it makes my Listings go so much smoother, and paperless too. I haven't used the Omni Pass yet, but after reading this I think I'll set it up, thanks.

Hi Liz, That is what I saying. It is like this great resource and no one knows about it and they don't even tell you when you buy it. Yet, once you know, it makes all the difference. You are so welcome.

08/05/2007 06:06 PM by San Diego Real Estate Voice authored by William Johnson GRI CRS e-PRO (RE/MAX Associates)

Hi Kathy, read your documentation on Omni Pass and then follow the directions. If you are right handed, mu tip to you be , use your left thumb. Pretend you are holding you tablet. Your scanner will be just about where your left thumb is, or at least easy to reach with making a big hand movement. Slide your thumb naturally like swiping a credit card. don't press down and don't drag your thumb. Just scan it. Practice before setting this up. Remember you must replicate the movement. That is part one. Once you are set up, whenever you have to log in, right click the key icon in your task bar and you will be able to drag a bigger key that looks just like it to the where you have entered the usename and password. Drop the big key there and click the appropriate check box when the new window automatically opens.

Repeating: right click the key icon and when you do, a bigger key pops up. Drag to the username and password area. ( fill it in before you drag the key to it) The key will encode what you typed and give you automatic access, never having to actually log in. You will love this, a real time saver and you have to remember nothing.

One caveat.

When you right click your key and want to open the program , it allows you to see all your passwords and usernames. Write these down somewhere, not in computer. If you loose the computer, or it gets stolen or god forbid it crashes, you need to have access to things from another computer. Don't fail to protect yourself.

It is like that old back up idea. Everyone knows they should back things up and regret it when things fails. A back up will not retrieve the passwords and user names as they are then encrypted. With Windows, you can count on a crash of some sort  happening. End of story. The question is will it happen after you backed it up or before?  Will you have made a copy of all your usernames and passwords? Think you can login and request them. You won't even remember how many you have . Because of the ease of using the system, you will sign up more often and with things you might not have normally. You'll see.

Love my Gateway Tablet... and they have a new one just out...

These are perfect for Realtors, not so much to impress folks, but because we can do so much MORE WORK with them...

William,

Thank you for this tutorial on the omni Pass......I really mean thank you, I hate reading those manuals they make everything so complicated :)

Hi Patrick, Thanks for the insight about Gateway. I actually started there and that is how I ended up with Motion Computing, they made Gateway's first Tablet PC. From there for my second one, nothing in the market could compare.

Hi Kathy, You are so welcome. Did you set it up yet. It really doesn't take very long to do it. It is almost intuitive, Almost, :-)

Hello Helen, I have no overheating issues that I can tell. Interestingly I have a cooling pad when I sitting in my message recliner chair and relaxing with it. Since I do a lot of voice work, I write a lot with Dragon Naturally Speaking. Since I practice it a bit, it doesn't require me to do much other than sit there and talk to it. Occasionally , I will use the stylus but mostly the program likes learning from voice.

My cool pad has a fan in it and I put a soft backing on it as it is more comfortable. My extended battery gets warm which is why I use it. In the winter months of course it feels delightful, lol

Hi Joeanne,I actually considered the 8 " but went for the bigger one again. I know you must love it. It is so powerful and puts most notebooks to shame. The ability to do hand writing all the time , is most awesome. Jotting down phone numbers, never having to look for not pads. I use my tablet in all the ways one can.

Thanks for sharing your experience. it is a great company as well. They developed the technology I understand.

Hi Pam and Paul. My recommendation is time awaits for no one. Get the Tablet and enjoy what you can do with it. It takes a bit to get used to but then out shines everyone with just a notebook.

I mentioned your idea today in a top producer's breakfast meeting this morning in Maryland...

Rebecca, Yes yes yes. You would come to love computing because it almost seems to be alive. the tablet will became an extension of you and you can accomplish a lot but more important, come to enjoy the experience better.

Hi William,

Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed reading your thorough post. I've been eyeing a tablet for a few years now. I use to us tablets in a past career but I've alway been weary of the durability of a tablet. Have you ever dropped the tablet and if so how well did it hold up? I guess I had the same concern before buying a pocket pc for a phone but I've dropped it many times and have not had an issue. I've been eyeing the Panasonic Toughbooks because they look pretty durable.

Hi Alex,no worries anymore. They sell bumper cases for my model and it won't get even dented. it is a rubber or neoprene case. It holds up fine to short drops, better than a notebook. Interestingly enough because of the ease in handling it,  as you know, you usually don't drop it,lol  Go ahead and get one, they are great!

Soon, very soon! Hows the learning curve?

Hi Paula, it has been a while. Missed you. It's all coming. I still have lots to do though. I haven't started the group stuff. Michael Russer is going to doing a special 10 week program for his graduates and that is going to cut in to the time pretty good. Ii need a vacation. It is not so much the overwhelm anymore, now it is just trying to be effective with both blogs. A little slow on my own, better on ActiveRain as I don't put all the fun stuff there. Just TextBook things for the consumer.

William, thank you for an absolutely amazing post... I am considering buying a tablet and this post pretty much has me sold.  My main concern is missing the keyboard.  I'm a pretty fast typist and that could be an issue.  I know that there are attachable keyboards, but not sure how comfortable or flimsy they are.

Thanks again!!!  I am so glad that I found this post!

08/07/2007 11:11 PM by Pasadena CA Real Estate - Irina Netchaev (Keller Williams International Realty)

Hi Irina, You may have misunderstood. When the tablet is in the port replicator, you will have a keyboard. It attaches like any other keyboard via USB cable. I have several. I have one that I take on the road that the tablet sits in *see the accessories hyperlink in post. Then I have a regular keyboard  that I use on my desk, just like any other desktop computer would have ( Tablet would be engaged in the port replicator. When you are using the Tablet in bed or watching TV, you can use the stylus for the on board touch key board. All in all you have great versatility to use what ever you like best. I use all of them. You will have great flexibility in what you choose and when you choose it.

Looks like great minds think alike.  I wrote about Tech Savvy agents back in June -same concept, same ideas, only your post is a lot more detailed.  You even provided the tech specs.

I even had a client chose me because of the "Tech Savvy" blog.

I have been thinking about getting a tablet.  After reading your post I know that I will. Thank you for this great post.

Hi Tracy, How do like the HP Tablet? I was one of the winners in the 2005 HP Technology Award. But when I tied to convnce myself to go away from Motion Computing, I just couldn't. I love mine I would enjoy hearing how you use yours and if you are maximizing the experience.

Hi Barbara,

I know you will always be happy with your decision. The tablet technology is so beneficial for REALTORS. It just seems to have  been made for the way we work.

Hi William

I just bought an HP Tablet and am wondering if I need to purchase additional software for my clients to sign on winforms.

06/27/2008 02:48 AM by Israel

Good Morning Israel. No software needed. Go to windows and complete your documents. Select Print documents. When the box comes up from windows about the printing, instead of printing to the default printer, select Windows Journal. The documents will be moved to Journal. General I save them to the property address. In journal once you save you, you can pull up the documents and client can then sign them. From Windows Journal, you can print them out, e-mail them, etc. Don't forget to ask your client if they would like a printed copy or if they would prefer you e-mail their copies.

That's all there is to it. Pretty simple and straightforward. Thanks for dropping by. It is a pretty cool feature and already built in to the tablet PC. Windows Journal is standard for all tablet PCs.
