I went to Active Rain Camp yesterday! It was great! What I liked most was the way they put a ton of useful information into a "bullet point" format. What I mean by that is that they didn't overwhelm us, they really condensed it down to a "DO THIS" list. I came away with some definite plans for my week.

But that's not what this post is about. As you might imagine, it was also a fun party of Rainers. There were some names I recognized and some I didn't. What I found the most interesting is that the "big names" had personalities which I expected.....they matched their online personality. WHAT they blogged about on Active Rain varied, some did very personal posts, some were strictly hyper-local and some were a mixture of those and some general interest posts. And yet, they all were exactly as I would have guessed in person. They allowed their personality and business acumen come through in their writing.....isn't that what we are trying to do?

On the other hand, I met some people for the first time, and when I got home and checked out their posts....I didn't recognize the person I talked to at Rain Camp.

I found it interesting that the most successful bloggers/rainers found a way to insert their personality and business approach into their writing. I think this really allows the client to get a solid feel for the agent, and decide if this is the right fit for their needs. Will some prospects decide NOT to work with us? (how could this happen :)) Of course, but I would rather they make that decision up front and not after we spend 5 hours visiting houses.....weed me out and find someone that works for you.

Bottom line....write the way you think, act and speak! The most successful bloggers do...and meeting them at the Active Rain Camp was such fun!

I always try to put my personality into my blogging - you are so right that it makes a difference when people get to know you from your blog - you need to write consistently with your personality!

Hi Karen -- Maybe the ones you met who didn't match their 'online' personalities don't write their own blog posts?

Hi Karen! Sorry I didn't meet you in person at RainCamp on Saturday. I agree with your comments, and I certainly have a number of things I will be implementing from the things Ben Kinney shared!

You know Barbara....that's definitely a possibility :) but I suspect with those I met that they are uncomfortable with blogging still.

Tricia....so many people there and I had such a limited amount of time to meet people...so we'll have to all do this again

Karen, it is SO important! I also feel this way about social media. Be who you are when you FB & tweet. I love it when people say: I knew that had to be you because you talk just like you tweet! :-)

Karen, I think you would pick me out pretty easily as the same person in person. I talk about Goldens, Starbucks, Panera, tech tools,,,,,and I love, love  Southern Maryland. Look forward to meeting you some day..you'll see!

Karen--this is GREAT advice. Talk like you write and write like you talk! Don't get airs about you in your writing, or edit out your personality.

Yes, I really am sarcastic sometimes. Annoyed at other agents' incompetence. And have a wicked sense of humor.

I hope I get you meet you F2F sometime.

Karen .. I went to RainCamp last year and it was interesting to meet people and match their personality to their blog .. example Jason Crouch and Russell from Austin ... they are what I expected them to be!

Karen, I have heard that comment a few times. Thing is, it just doesn't work. I'll bet those people aren't getting much business because buyers and sellers see right through that as well when they meet in person. I'm the me in my blog!

I got the opportunity to meet a few a couple weeks ago just before the Great Floor in Nashville at REBar Camp.  So true.....  Looking forward to one of these RainCamps too.

I'd love to attend a RainCamp.  Maybe they can put one on here on the Islands?

It really was fun putting faces to "voices".  I didn't meet many of the regulars, but those I did meet, including you, were certainly not a disappointment.  It was like meeting old friends.  I hope Rain Camp gets to come through again soon.

Karen,

I definitely agree with you about letting your true personality show through your writing, I too would rather be weeded out in favor of someone the client felt more comfortable with.  You can't be all things to all people and it's really rocky when you don't click with the people you are working with!

YOu have to be who you are.  Otherwise it will come across as phony.

I never understand the people that say do not say anything that might offend someone.  You gotta be who you are, because they will find out eventually anyways.  Jut get it over with right from the start and show us who you are.
