You Just got a Fishhook Impales into your cheek...Now What?! Panic!!!!

NO!!!! Don't panic!!!

This happened to me this weekend.  Fishing with some friends that just get out once or twice a year.   They are not very proficient in their casting abilities, but I take time to teach them.

Everyone on the pontoon is being careful but accidents do happen, and all of a sudden...I KNOW how the FISH feels!

There is a fish hook the is impales into the side fo my cheek.  WHAT DO I DO NOW!?  Panic...Jump over the side and swim for shore...UM, NO, we are in 5 feet 10 inches of water and I am only 5 feet 9.  I will drown because I don't swim a bit.

My wife suggests we head to shore and go to the Emergency room. ( As she slowing sits down before almost passing out).  NO, not on a beautiful fishing day like this.

So, what do you do?  First of all, unhook the hook from the rest of the line so that the person who is nearly in shock from impaling you stops jerking on the hook.  Now, find someone that has not lost conscience yet to look at the hook.  Now I tried to pull it out but the barb that protrudes up to keep it impales won't let me pull it out.

NEXT step is...Cut the end that ties to the fish line off of the hook.   Then give the kind person helping you a pliers and have them PUSH the hook through the skin and out pulling the entire hook out.

Now...Get back to fishing!  (I did put some alcohol on the outside of the wound and then later after fishing from the inside!)

This is a True story.  I wanted pictures but no one was well enough to take any.

This is something that can happen real fast.  Knowing how to take care of it can make the difference in a great trip or a ruined trip with medical bills.  Most importantly, there are articles written everyday in fishing magazines and on line...find out how to do this properly. It isn't real hard.

Fish Safe.

I admire your calmness and love for fishing. Bear Grylls would be proud. I have had to perform this procedure on myself after trying to free a lodged lure from a snag. It hurts, but no need to waste a great day fishing! Good story.

Good Morning...I am OK, can't hardly tell where is happened.  I had to lance a finger once to get a hook out that got into my finger when the fish wiggled one time.

I carry some first aid stuff for this type of emergency.

I have done this to myself when learning to fly cast. My dad..old country boy who NEVER went to the doctor did exactly what you said to get the hook out of my back. He said " if you get an arrow in your leg you kinda do the same thing. Just push it through" Gotta love it!

Old Dad never got excited about blood. I was jumping off a porch and somehow landed my hand on a board with a nail in it. I took board and all to Dad. The nail actually went all the way through. He pulled it out, poured iodine on it and put a band aid on both sides. I would be taking my kids to the emergency room but the thought never crossed his mind. We have become wimps I say!
