Hallandale Beach, Florida---City commishers voted to buy up some of the last affordable housing in Hallandale Beach and evict 84 residents---mostly elderly and mostly poor, including one WWI vet with terminal lung cancer---to make way for an expanded city park. Is this how democracy is supposed to work?

Too many of our south Florida politicians are the de facto prostitutes of big business special interests. For so many years, my hometown of Dania has been fighting the attempts of the nearby airport to expand, which would throw many out of their homes. Their perverted notion of "progress" basically means more profits for the rich, minimum-wage jobs for those who do find employment ---- and cozy relations between big bucks and shameless politicians.

Topping the list of politico creeps are Josephus Eggeletion, mayor of Broward County, and Mara Gilulianti, mayor of Hollywood. Sheriff Ken Jenne is another creep currently under investigation for alleged improprieties. Yet hope does seem to flicker anew. Commissioner Keith Wasserstrom of Hollywood was arrested on charges of inappropriate use of his position, and once-cocky politicians seem a little more careful now. God bless the New Times paper for persistently digging up dirt. We need Woodward and Bernstein journalism here!
