I just finished watching an old Monster Flick "Godzilla v. The Smog Monster" (1971)

GodzillaBasically this one featured the Smog Monster who feeds on air pollution and sludge and spews sulphuric acid on his enemies! His defenses are really put to the test when he is confronted by Godzilla ...the Savior of the Village. Godzilla has Atomic Breath that enables him to Fly. But when the Smog Monster resorts to releasing a toxic beam of energy, projected from his right eye...Godzilla is forced to activate the Human Erected Electronic Grid that sends ultimately Lethal Currents...lethal for the Smog Monster that is!

THAT FILM WAS 35 YEARS OLD

Yet the underlying concerns of the movie were as timely as today! Polluting The Earth

If you look on the Smog Monster as the problems of Pollution and Acid Rain facing us today. And Godzilla represents... with his "Atomic" Powers and his Partnership with the People's Military...our efforts to fight these problems. If we saw it all then, as we see it now,

What have we been doing for 35 years? ~~~~~~~~~~

We are still making Movies and Documentary's about Pollution and the Polluters (minus the Monster of record).  Well....at least we have progressed to the point of naming names!

  So much for Progress!

This is incredible -- I must say I never have heard of this movie.  I guess at some level we know a lot of things and then we somehow all get amnesia.  I was thinking about my grandparents who had a market in California and brought in fresh produce from the farm every day.  It became very popular with the movie stars -- it was called Gelsen's Market -- it was all fresh - organic!  Wow -- then many years later they sold the markets and somehow the concept of fresh from the farm was lost!

Hi Joan...If you click on the link it's to a guys site that is all about Godzilla! It's cool!

I think what amazed me about the movie was the timeliness of the subject matter...and how sad that we haven't progressed!

Joan, I don't think I could sit through that at this point.  Isn't it sad that we have been ignoring a problem that not only won't go away but gets worse??

Joan, A very interesting blog...I enjoyed reading it. It is all very sad....I guess mankind is like a rollercoaster gone out of control. We're on our way to mass disappearance like so often has happened in the past....all these cities were once highly developed (in fact many believe that earlier societies of mankind were more advanced technologically than we currently are ) and look what happened to them !

The only ones ignoring it are the big companies who make it. I think there's some publicity going on...over here they announce the polluters on the news.....

People take the issues of pollution and global warming far too lightly, IMO.  We are supposed to be a more learned, sophisticated and educated society but yet we tend to act like we don't know what the results will be.  Good post, Joan!

Joan, it's so alarming to have to pick up bottled water in favor of just using the sink. The container it comes in is probably another issue altogether...one thing after another.  The news  the other night featured a warning that computer printers can be worse for your lungs than cigarettes.  So, we are deterred from paying attention to the planet because right in our home is a potential hazard.  Thank you for forcing some recognition!  CRICKETS SANG, but the number is just not the same.  Something's going on.

Hi Carol..It will be like everything else important that affects the people as a whole instead of a chosen few...it won't be dealt with till it's too late...Believe me I think often of the Fall of Rome! Thanks for reading

Laurie...I won't tell you about the special I saw about bottled water! Let me put it this way...you're better off putting a filter on you faucet and filling a thermos each day!

There is so much going on....it's overwhelming.. so the solution is to turn the other way or there is always the band-aid approach!

I thought I'd seen every Godzilla movie on my black and white TV, but this one got past me.  I'll look for it on re-runs.  Thanks.

Old movies can be a lot of fun to watch.  This past weekend, I watched a Star is Born.  It's interesting how many of the lessons in these films are relevant to what's going on today.  I would never have associated a Godzilla movie with smog pollution! Very interesting...

Lola...I'm going to have to go back and re-watch some of the oldies. When I was younger I didn't pay that much attention to social relevance. Now I wonder what I missed?
