JUST BECAUSE YOU WATCH GOLF TV, THAT DOESN'T MAKE YOU A GOLFER !!!

By
Home Stager with HOME STYLE AND STAGING LLC

HOME STYLE AND STAGING recevied a phone call recently, a lady called to ask about my pricing, etc.

Into the conversation she began to question the pricing, the way in which I did the staging, the time that it would take, when I could start the project, etc. Needless to say I was beginning to get somewhat annoyed with her badgering.  However, thought I had better be nice and helpful as she may turn out to be a REAL client.

The she said the words that all of us (Stagers) hate to hear.... "I HAVE WATCHED THE STAGING SHOWS AND I THINK THAT I CAN DO THIS MYSELF"...  I do not know about you but I am sick and tired of hearing this from people. Oh, and she did add..." I AM PRETTY GOOD AT DECORATING, ALL MY FRIENDS TELL ME SO" Oh really ?? I think to myself.

So, I realized that she just wanted confirmation that she knew as much about staging as I did, as she watched the staging shows. Then I just had to say it.. "WELL MY HUSBAND WATCHES GOLF TV AND HE WILL NEVER BE A PROFESSIONAL GOLFER"    She had no idea I don't have a husband...but I think I got my point across...  Then I almost got on a roll and asked if she lost weight by watching" THE BIGGEST LOSER ...Thought better about it and got off the phone...

Mary Lou,

You are great! What a comeback. Also loved the one about the commercials getting in the way. If you want to supplement your staging income you can write comedy.

Humor is the best medicine.

Mary Lou - thank you for making me laugh about this topic because normally it makes me very frustrated! My partner and I have gotten phone calls and emails from people who want to be stagers and are 'fishing' for information, assistance and affirmation.

I think the media portrays staging too much as a 'women's hobby' that anyone with a bit of design sense can do. The reality of running a professional home staging business is far different than most people expect - its hard work with lots of different and hidden associated costs and tasks that go on behind the scenes.

So true, and not only that many think they can watch the Real Estate shows and do their own transaction.

Very true and so funny. I tell people that I watch cooking shows all the time but will never be a professional chef.

Who among us hasn't gone about cooking a new dish only to find it doesn't look as good as the picture in the  recipe book or what we saw on TV?

Great post!

Mary Lou-

Great answer and so true! It is kind of the same as everyone thinks that they would be a great stager or they take a 3 day class and think that they are ready. They think it is so easy and have no idea what we do.There is so MUCH more to it . We have to understand Real Estate Marketing, Demographics, decorating, marketing our own business, people skills and sheer hard work. Or when we do a model home and hang all the pix and window treatments and iron them as well as bedding in the wee hours of the night to meet a deadline.

Don't worry about that woman-just stage her competition (ha!ha)

That's a great response Mary Lou! I love it. It reminds me of those Holiday Inn commercials: I'm not a doctor but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

What was very good. Your post is so true. No one NEEDS a Stager, Realtor, Financial Adviser, a Baby Setter, or Dog Walker. They can do it themselves. Do they have the TIME, KNOWLEDGE, FORTITUDE, CONNECTIONS to do it? I had a friend sell his house a few months ago FSBO. He was retired he had the time. He researched all the Internet sights found the information,  he had the time to gain the knowledge needed. He bought the house years ago in a part of town that is very desirable now. No way to be down on it, he had the fortitude, time knowledge. It was a nice house he knew a lot of people, connections sold it. Sold it to an unrepresented buyer who overpaid...  he had the TIME, KNOWLEDGE, FORTITUDE, CONNECTIONS. The stars lined up!

That is against the odds for sure, most times it doesn't play out like that. People pay for what they are lacking, and a service they need.

I hope the buyer enjoys the home for many years to come, Cuz if two or three years from now , they will be very very upsets.

GOOD LUCK enjoy!

Mary Lou - just a minute while I wipe away my tears from laughing so hard - love the "Biggest Loser" comment - that certainly would have got her attention.  What gaul - where do people get off, having that kind of conversation?  Unbelievable!

Mary Lou - Whenever people find out what I do, the comment is usually the same, "That sounds like fun".  I love what I do (thankfully), but we all know it is a lot of work!  Continued success.

BWA HA HA HA!  Mary Lou - thank you for the bust-out laugh!  I just lost a Staging job because the seller "has a friend" that will "help" her "Stage" her house - WHEN SHE HAS TIME.  Huh?  I'm readily available, day or evening...and it would have been done by now, very economically.  The Realtor is upset because she can't get the place listed yet.  Julie

Glad that everyone saw the humor in my response...and yes, Donna..I will use that one next that I watch cooking shows but I am no chef...and I think that I will write comedy as I watch comedy shows !! that makes just about as much sense....

That took a lot of control not to ask the biggest loser question!  Too funny and it happens quite often. Made me laugh right out loud cause we have all been there.

That is too funny!  Hoorah for the quick witted come back, but it's probably best that you didn't continue with the "Biggest Loser."  --you could get a bad rep that way!  Thanks for sharing this and now I know exactly what I will say when the situation arises for me.  See ya next week.

Hi Mary Lou,

For all the reasoning and explaining... what could be better than your "golfer" response?

It really is that simple.

Thanks!

Didn't expect this one to be so funny ... Great comeback and personal restraint.

She'll be calling you again in a years time when her "decorating skills" don't manage to attract a buyer.

Be sure to tell her then how your husbands game has improved ;o)
