Getting Things Done, Finally

Do you ever feel like this?

The same thoughts pop into your head--over and over again..." I must do a will. I need to get that physical. I need do get in shape...etc."

The recurring thoughts are only a symptom of something more important than all of the collective thoughts you've ever had--YOU are NOT getting things done that need to be done. You make lists but so many items get carried forward or are forgotten.

"I often wondered if I had ADHD--attention deficit hyperactivity disorder"

Here's another problem...distractions. Here's what I mean...you're working on a project. All of a sudden, something pops into your head and you are off the project and onto this thing that surfaced...the project doesn't make it to completion and never sees the light of day...it too, get's on to that magical list of things to do...

All of this is insanity.

We can SPEND our lives in this kind of mode and feel like we're getting nowhere (and we are) or we can determine to do something about this "disease."

Two weeks ago, after I looked at the piles on my desk ( and Oh yeah, I knew what was in each pile and that's why they remained as piles--liar, liar) and decided to do some research on "getting organized." Actually, my search began on google with the search terms "Time Management."

I came upon a web site and a book written in 2005 by David Allen called "Getting Things Done." I write this today to those who suffer, as I have for so many years--and if you don't know about this book or it's methodology, do yourself a BIG favor and get the book.

Stephen Covey's The Seven Habits system is really good, but I must tell you Allen's system goes beyond it and helps you look at your philosophy of planning and doing.

One big thing it has done for me is to clear the mind-chatter and the mind-clutter.

Quiet is nice. Clarity is a great elixir.

Check out the info on this site. You can get the book on amazon, of course.

Sounds like good stuff. I was reading somewhere recently that real estate agents cited their number one problem as being time management...though I would imagine it's not just real estate agents with this "disease". Have a great day!

Shannon, I think it is a big problem, and we just don't realize it...just going from what you're acting on in the present to whatever comes up next leads to fooling ourselves that we are being most productive. All the best...

Joanne, I think you're right...it is a very helpful book...you know, I was doing something else and got wrapped up in my email and I saw your comment so here I am--"now what was it that I was supposed to be doing?"

Mike I appreciate the poke. I kinda lost my blogging wheels. I need to come back with something fresh and of value. Haven't felt that way...and in a funk. I appreciate you brother and want to wish you and your family a wonderful thanksgiving. Here's to "getting 'er done!"
