Webster LakeLake Chaubunagungamaug or Webster Lake - Massachusetts

Webster Lake is a wonderful getaway for residents of Massachusetts and some people living in the Metrowest area consider it is a site for a summer home.

I have worked with clients in this area who see Webster Lake as a great alternative to the Cape Cod traffic and congestion.  As a destination for boating, swimming, jet skiing and just relaxing in the sun, Webster Lake is a great getaway and a good place to invest in a second home.

The lake itself is 1,442 acres with a 17-mile shoreline.  It is located close to the Connecticut border.  With a house on this lake you can enjoy the tranquility of waterfront property as well as the casino nightlife of the state.

Webster Lake's alternative name is Lake Chaubunagungamaug which came from the Nipmuc Indians and is legend to mean "Fishing Place at the boundaries - Neutral Meeting Grounds."

Another popular translation is, "You fish on your side, I fish on my side and nobody fish in the middle."  This meaning was concocted by the late Laurence J. Daly, the editor of the Webster Times in 1920.  The translation became so popular that most of lake's residents prefer it to the original.

The locals also enjoy using the long version - Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg and it is a source of pride when this pronunciation rolls off the tongue of anyone who has grown up in the area.

However you name it, Webster Lake has a lot to offer.  With 7-8 islands, two marinas and some wonderful restaurants along with boating and beautiful sunsets, it is definitely a place to consider when thinking about the investment of a second or possibly a summer home.

Claudette, You are bringing back memories.  I used to fill my '66 Mustang convertible up with gas for 18 cents per gallon and drive out to Webster Lake with my friends.  We could pronounce the long version of the word and we were proud of it.  You are so right!

Hi Claudette ~ You definitely have to be a local to master the long version! I love the Indian lake names and this sounds like a beautiful spot.

Gail:

Ah - you are right there in Connecticut.  This must have been a great hangout for you when you were a teenager. How much practice did it take to pronounce the name of the lake?

Liz:

We have so many great names in Massachusetts that are legacies of Native Americans. I love when people in other parts of the country try to pronounce them.  Lake Webster is a beautiful spot. I have clients who are looking for a second home there so I have been spending some time in the area.

You should get an extra percentage on your commission if you list a home on Lake Chaubunagungamaug!!!

And forfeit one percent if you're a local and you call it Lake Webster!

Claudette:  No wonder the name has become Webster Lake.  That Chaubunagungamaug is a mouth full.  That should be extra credit spelling bee material for area students.

Craig:

You have re-written the rules of real estate on Lake Chaubunagungamaug. I, hereby, dub you the Mayor of Webster, Mass.

Chris Ann:

That is an interesting question.  I wonder if the area's children have to pass that on a spelling test. More than likely, if they want to graduate from any local school.
