Imagine a beach where you cannot buy anything and you cannot leave any trash behind.

Stop imagining and start packing.......because all of this is real off the coast of Georgia on a National Seashore named Cumberland Island.  For those of you who have not had the pleasure, make your reservation through the National Park Service and take a day trip or if you like camping, spend up to a week on the Cumberland Island Georgia.

Julie,

This sounds like a place that one could get lost on.  Lost in thought and relaxation and eye candy.  I need to set aside some time to visit the island.

Oh wow! We have "disappearing islands". They're in the Intracoastal Waterway, and disapper when the tide rises, as the water comes in through Ponce Inlet. But we have nothing like this! Imagine seeing wild horses! You said they're "feral". So I assume you can't get near them? Or have they become accustomed to people enough to take a treat from your hand? =)

Marlene,

Cumberland is a National Seashore and one of our country's least known treasures.  I am glad to share.

Don M.,

That is just a small part of the island. I have previous posts on other parts of the island - both by land and by sea (jetski).  It is an amazing and fabulous place to visit.

Don R.,

This is a trip like no other - but make plans - Cumberland can be booked up to 6 months in advance to access the island.

Lisa,

When I mean feral they are not natural to the area but were brought there by the families who lived on the island.  Mrs. Carnegie in her will set free her horses and these are many generations later descendants of those domesticated animals.

You are not allowed to feed anything on Cumberland.  These horses are not tame in any way - do you see how they are passing me but not really excited about having their photos taken.  I keep my distance and respect them as well as species of wildlife on the island as is required by the National Park Service.

You should read about Cumberland Island - it has a fasincating history.....starting with Indians.....
