This past Monday May 17,2010, there was a joint announcement  from the San Diego Zoological Society and the Board of Directors  of the Natural History Museum that they were looking to join forces in possible merger.

The specialties of these  two world famous cultural institutions covering wildlife and  the natural environment are similar enough in their aspirations that a partnership seems to be a real possibility.

While the goals of the Natural History museum are to interpret the world around us through research, the Zoological Society feels they complete that work. Understanding the natural history and nature are quite simpatico.

Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum was founded in 1874  and is the 8th oldest museum of its kind . The  Zoo came about much later being founded in 1916. While many think of the Zoo as a collections of animals, this zoo, one of the most famous in the world goes way beyond that in their efforts to provide a sanctuary for thousands of animals while providing a  landscape of rare plants from all climates around the world in a living classroom setting like no other.

Good Morning Hannah,

When I first thought about it,I was figuring maybe the economy  was forcing things but that is not the case. It does seem logical and one of the coolest parts I didn't mention because they haven't settled anything as yet, is that if they join forces , they would naturally also enjoy an economy of scale and that could mean that a membership in one  automatically gets you two. The displays and the audio/video production in the Museum as out of this world ( are actually in this world) and I doubt many could go through the place and not come away feeling enriched for the experience. The Zoo on the other hand with its many programs and new exhibit areas, the care and the love these animals are given just makes you want to thank them for providing it. One of my past clients was the daughter of the President of the Zoological Society and I think it so important that people within a reasonable distance support it and go there and learn, be entertained and love that we have such a treasure here in San Diego. I was going through many photos of the zoo and I should have added a couple, perhaps I will amend the post and put a couple there. The sites and sounds of this amazing place can not be taken for granted but I also  think of it as a gift. How fortunate that I can be near and a part of it , even if only a spectator. And the summer nights shows are just incredible. Laser ,sound and light shows that really excite the senses. There is something there for everyone of every age and of every interest.

WIlliam - I have been by the museum but have not been to vist yet. One of these days. Sounds like a merge is a smart move to me.

Hi Jeff, I just know that you have a whirlwind time both in DC and with the ARU and the group , then the graduation. You probably need a vacation. :-)

I think this would be a great idea for these two icons of Southern California to work together more closely. The San Diego Zoo is a great place to visit and the Wild Animal Park is a truely unique experience. I'm looking forward to seeing what they can accomplish together.

William,

When I was reading, I immediately thought that economic reasons could play heavily here. But this is life, and if the can get make them stronger, why not do it.

Great photos, as usual

William,

This merger sounds like it could be a good move for the folks in your area.  Not to mention the tourist trade for the city.

Hi Lizette, As often as go , I see things differently each time. I never tire of it. In the summer months they always have a sort of entertainment near the entrance. And it is not the usual things . Painters throwing paint ) spinning the canvas ) in the gorgeous images of animals. I did a video on that one. They have statues that come to life. Once they had  a Goddess as a Water Fountain. She would shot water from her finger tips , her head, quite amazing. I have been there for private events at night and they are amazing. So no matter how often you go, something always new.

William, I'm surprised that they are seperate entities.  It sounds like it would be a win/win situation.

Hi Marchel,Well the are currently runby their own boards I am not sure if they will combine the operations or if they will just do joint efforts? But I can certainly see the benefit the could gain from collaborating.
