Who doesn't love to sit outside and watch the birds play? Well okay there might be some people, however, I love it! They are so beautiful. So how do you attract the birds? Well food of course!

Bird Feeder

Here are some helpful tips for choosing a bird feeder and how to keep your birds happy.

#1 - Humming bird feeders with bright colored 'flowers' can do the trick for attracting a pair or more of hummingbirds! Birds love nectar - you can buy it premixed or make your own with some sugar and water be sure to add a little red food color to get their attention. Believe it or not, humming birds can eat over half their body weight each day. It's a good idea to have one or more feeders in your yard to help them on their search for food.

#2 - Wooden bird feeders come in a variety of shapes and styles. They are attractive and blend in well with the outdoors!  A hopper style wooden feeder is good because it gives the birds a place to  perch while they are enjoying their dinner. Their are also a variety of pre fab feeders as well, such as the tubular one in the picture above.

#3 - What type of food to choose will take a learning curve. It depends on the type of bird you want to attract and what type of climate you live in. You can go to your neighborhood hardware store or a Lowe's or Home Depot. They should have a wide variety for you to choose from. Start out with the smallest bag until you find one that works.

#4 - Location of your feeder can also be a hit or miss. Remember that some birds like to eat close to the ground and some would prefer to stay away from the neighborhood cat. Take this into consideration when choosing your location. Remember also if you have squirrels in the area you will need to place the feeder where it would be difficult for the little varmints to get to as well.

Once you get everything just right you can sit back and enjoy the beauty of it all!

Paige I have two feeders in my yard for the hummingbirds.  I love to watch them in the afternoon feeding. I also have two bottlebrush trees planted that they can't resist.

Hi Paige, We love watching all the different kinds of birds that we feed, including hummers.  And when we spot one at our feeders that we've never seen before, it is exciting.  We have a wild bird supply store where we buy our bird food and other supplies.  I make my own hummingbird food though.  We also feed the squirrels and other critters, and basically we have a little wildlife preserve in our yard.
