Murphy NC, Friday May 21st will be the annual Cherokee County Relay For Life event. The event begins at 7:00pm and closing ceremonies begin on Saturday at 7:30am
Cherokee County Relay Team raised $114,500 for research last year, earning them an award from the American Cancer Society.
The event begins with a Survivors Lap around the park's track, there will be entertainment, games, food, activities and will culminate with a luminary ceremony at dusk. Awards will be presented to top team and individual fund-raisers. Teams will be challenging each other to spend the night at the park and they can setup tents along the Hiwassee River.
I am a breast cancer survivor and this event is always emotional for those who have lost loved ones and those who have survived. This year I purchased 2 luminaries, one for my father who passed away 2 years ago and one for a special woman who lost her life to cancer in February.
The luminary ceremony is quite a site to witness. Hundreds and hundred of luminaries line the park's walkway paths. They represent someone who has passed away from cancer.

Only 2 hours from Atlanta, Chattanooga and Asheville, Murphy, NC feels like it's from a different time and place. A time when life moved at a slower pace and people savored the simple pleasures.
