THE DOWNSIDE HOLDS AN UPSIDE; If You Can Find The Good Things, Focus On Them....

By
Real Estate Agent with Douglas Elliman Real Estate 30HA0800896

In these times of great difficulty, I have some things I want to share with all of you: THE DOWNSIDE HOLDS AN UPSIDE; if you can find the good things, focus on them....

What Goes Down can Come UP

I know some of the laws and theories of physics---Not well, but I know them by reading and listening to people who are physicists or scientists or people who are just plain aware of what Descartes, Newton, Einstein, or any of the leading theorists of times long gone have come up with. These laws are familiar to all of us in one form or another:

  • What goes up must come down...
  • Persistence causes resistance...
  • Stimulus; response...
  • The Theory of relativity

The ideas of Carl Jung on "Synchronicity, An Acausal Connecting Principle", Gary zukav on the "Seat Of The Soul", Deepak Chopra on "Creating The Life You Want", Belitz and Lundstrom's "The Power of Flow" and other countless books with these ideas now permeate our thinking, without our even being aware of them:

  • There are no accidents...
  • What goes around, comes around...
  • Go with the flow...
  • What you can conceive, you can achieve...
  • There is abundance in the universe
  • Be careful what you ask for; you might get it!

What does all this have to do with real estate???

Well, we as real estate professionals are all caught up in the "down turn" of the housing market. That downward spiral is an actual emotional occurrence and has the ability to pull us all down with it; just as surely as the water, swirling, pulls everything around it with it, down into the sink hole or the drain, or the metaphorical black hole!DOWNWARD SPIRAL

On the brink, I have felt this pull--a force that is almost irresistible; I have felt it at such a deep level that I have literally felt it pull me down physically--my feet could not move fast enough; my legs felt heavy and unable to pick up to walk! ...Like a bad dream, the one that you jump from, into a wild awakening that makes your heart race and your breathing almost stop. I have been there on the precipice and I have felt the downward spiral.

WHAT WE CAN DO:

keep your chin up and forge ahead--What goes down CAN go up again! If I were feeling the pull of the down-ward spiral AGAIN,  I would scratch gravel to find the upside, what ever it may be:

LOOK FOR THE ABUNDANCE

  • Maybe a house sold that was on the market for a LONG time--
  • Maybe someone got a modification, FINALLY, and is going to be OK...
  • Maybe a foreclosure was halted by a helpful family member....
  • what ever you can come up with, come up with it!!
  • It is critical that you start building a positive roster of happenings that you can focus on. If you do, you will begin to see the positive things start to happen-
  • it's not magic; it is a law of nature that what ever you focus on, you will get!!! (That goes for the negative as well--so be careful what you focus on!)

Marguerite: Thanks for reading and commenting--I wanted to share something with all the troubled agents out there who are having a difficult time getting past the downward spiral--that is the thing that keeps us down and unless we can see a way out of it we will surely be sucked down into the abyss....

Hi Paula...Congratulations on the feature!

What a thought provoking post you have written.  It is so important for all of us not only in our work but in our entire life to think of the positive.  Only be doing that can we move forward.  That's not to say that we ignore the negative things happening, we must recognize them in order to deal with them and to use this knowledge to find solutions not excuses.

Ron and Alexandra: Thank you so much for reading and commenting! This post was a labor of love for me. I love my work and my fellow agents and AR members. While my words may not get out there to everyone, the members here and the agents who are now going through great difficulty will at least have a chance to see it and know they are not alone.

Kathleen: Very wise words that you have spoken here...we are all in this together whether we recognize it or not and by letting others know that there is something you can do to get through the rough patches, we are making it a little easier to go forward with a sense of great accomplishment...instead of defeat! Thanks for your valuable input.

Yes Paula.  You have the gift of being able to put things into context in such a way as to to change perspectives.  Like making lemonade out of lemons.  There is totally a place for such perspectives anf for people like you.  Thanks for the attitude adjustment!  ;-)

Yes I tell myself everyday, Just think how little competition their will be when 500 more agents retire their liscense, hang in there. That's one of my positive out looks of a slower market.  Tighten those belts and hang on.

Erica: you are right on the money! Negative agents in an office can make that office a place where no one wants to join---that happened in our offfice and now that those 2 people have gone, we have a whole new attitude and a group of new agents who are positive and productive too. Tahnks for your comment....

Patricia and Amy: It does get me through this tough market---I just re-read the book "The Power of Flow" (Charlene Belitz and Meg Lundstrom)--I highly recommend it for developing the ability to let your life "flow" the way it was meant to---there is great satisfation and happiness when you are able to just let it unfold rather than try to make something it is not. There-in lies the discomfort we are all feeling right now.

Kent: You are so dear! I am so happy you got something from the post! It makes me feel as though the difficulty I went through had apurpose after all!!! Thank you so much for your acknowlegment...

Sherry: I wish it were that way--but don't forget that those people also have an agenda and it may be the opposite of yours! How painful is that going to be when you wake up and realize that those agents never left after all---and in fact even more agents have joined the ranks?? That can happen, you know...real estate is a place where people go when there is no other place to go and we may see even more joining us in the near future as unemployment rises. May I suggest you adjust your thinking a bit and allow for those other agents to be where they are while you begin to develop a new technique for getting listings and finding buyers. Focus on what you want to do and get it done--meanwhile the other agents will find that the work may be too much for them, being new and all! That could be your ace in the hole! Just don't work with the negative--work with the positive and see the changes happen for the better for you. Thanks for your valuable input here....

I believe we program our sub conscious mind, which in turn guides us to our destiny. If you program it for failure by thinking "I can't do that" then your sub conscious mind will help you to "not do that". That goes along with the "positive thinking" theory.
