For those of us in the local area, the news has been taking a trip down memory lane.

Mt. St. Helens erupted

On a show I watched last night, it was reported that the eruption, which lasted 4 days, was the equivlient of having an Atomic Bomb going off every second . . . or 27,000 bomb blasts in that 4 day period.

The initial blast traveled 25 miles in less than 30 seconds.

This video shows the eruption in real time: [1:00 into the video]

24 Megatons of thermal energy was released in the intial blast.

Over 1.5 metric tons of sulfar dioxide was released into the atmosphere.

70% of the ice cap was instantly melted creating "lahars" (volcantic mudflows) which took with it the forested areas in its path.  The debris in the rivers clogged the Columbia River.  The water level dropped from 40 feet to 9 feet in less than 4 hours.  Merchant ships were stranded in the low water.

The "eruption column" rose 80,000 ft, and dumped ash in over 11 states.

All life was destroyed in the blast zone . . . 57 lives were lost, 250 homes, 46 bridges, 50 miles of railways, 185 miles of highway damaged/detroyed.  165,000 animals were killed (70,000 big game: elk, deer, bear) all birds, small animals. 12,000,000 Chinock / Coho salmon in hatcheries, rivers, streams.

Day turned to night.

Another "blast" from the past:

I could have told you the year, I could have told you the number of lives lost.  But I guess I hadn't seem the video of the eruption for years and years and well with 30 years of growing older and wiser it is much more profound to me now than it was when I was a freshman in high school 30 years ago.  I think having had my home hit by a tornado in 1992 (I was not in it at the time) has made me understand and respect natural disaster in a different way.  Dan Rather was so young 30 years ago too.  And I guess it puts today's government spending into perspective also.  When he reported it was likely 130 million dollars in road, rail and bridge damage my first thought... was "Was that all?"

It was an amazing event that I will never forget.  Even in Central Oregon, we heard the blast - just thought someone was dynamiting in the area at first. Wow!

Hi Tammy . . . Yes, I was younger too and it didn't really phase me. My sister lived here then. I was in So. Califonia. To experience a natural disaster when older, wiser . . . I think that's why I was so intrigued when the shows were aired last night. That would be an interesting post about your Tornado experiene!

Hey Darla -- (we rhyme!) I beat you'll never forget that sound!

Hi Carla!

Wow time flies doesn't it? I remember how awful I felt when it happened. I have a lot of family in Washington, although they weren't effected very badly, I was worried to death about them. I can't believe it's been 30 years... How close to the blast were you?

It's like it was only yesterday, tragic yet epic work of mother nature. Witnessing the eruption of Kilauea Iki is the most indelible memory of my life.

The destructive power is nature is an amazing thing. It makes us seem small when you think about it.

Carla...It doesn't seem like 30 years has past already.  The magnitude of that eruption is absolutely mind boggling.  The videos brought it back like it was only yesterday.

Hi Lisa . . . I was living in So. California (where I was born/raised) but my sister was up here at the time.  The ash was everywhere, about 125 miles away

Hey Michael -- and Mt. St. Helens hiccups every now and then since.

Hi Leolinda . . . and just for reference:  Kilauea Iki  Mt. St. Helens didn't have the molten lava flows.

Hey JL -- yes nature is certainly is a powerful force,

Hi Barb . . . Be nice!!  Exactly.

Hey Carra -- Time does fly.  I was young when it happened, and not living here.  I've been up to visit a couple of times, and the descruction is still very vivid.  Like a petrified forest, sideways.

Carla - I missed your blog yesterday, and I knew it was the anniversary but didn't think about it long enough to count the years.  I was living in Seattle.  We had a record release party that afternoon (my musician days) and many of our guests from Oregon fought through the ash to get up there.  I'll never forget that day.

I didn't realize that yesterday was the 30th anniversary. I listen to the news all the time, and I do not believe that I heard anything about it either.

Hi Cynthia . . . of course, I didn't know you had 'musician days' -- do tell!!  And being in Seattle at the time, Mt. St. Helens was a huge news event.  Memories all around!!

Hey Melissa -- it might not have been on national news, but local news covered it because . . . well, the event was amazing (but not in a good amazing).  The destructive power and might of nature.
