Last summer I had taken a Vacation to Manitoba. I had never been there before and discovered the province is quite beautiful. We spent two weeks at Lake Manitoba and I experienced a lot of "firsts". Keep in mind that I am a prairie and rocky mountain girl and we don't get to experience these things around here in Alberta and BC.
- The lakes around there are like oceans. The water appears to go on forever and in the evenings the waves are incredible
- Fish flies - In the evenings after the sun has gone down you start to here this low humming, almost like a helicopter in the distance. Then you look at the lights and they are being swarmed with fish flies. I could not believe how many there were. It looked like a billow of black smoke there were so many in one area. In the mornings the cabins (and everything else left outside) were covered in dead fish flies.
- Trivia - Fish flies only have a 24 hour life span
- Frogs- There are frogs everywhere. You have to be careful where you step.
- Snakes - You don't have to look too hard to find a snake.
- Shrews- I almost stepped on what I thought was a large mouse until I was informed that it was a shrew. They are like mice but bigger with a pointy nose.
- Muskrat - I had to get up early one morning and walk from the trailer to the cabin to use the bathroom and I almost got run over by a muskrat. I think both of us were equally as startled. I had no idea what it even was.
Anyway, it was a very educational and fun vacation for me and what I wanted to share is my favorite picture that I took on that trip. I would often head over to the rocks with my coffee and watch the birds, pelicans and listen to the waves. On one of these occasions I took this picture. It was taken with the first digital camera I ever owned (and still have) the Canon PowerShot S100.
It reminds me of the sense of calmness that I felt while I sat on those rocks. Something that doesn't seem to exist in my life too often. I hope you like it.
